Forskolin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-17)
Forskolin (7 beta-acetoxy-8, 13-epoxy-1 alpha,6 beta,9 alpha-trihydroxy-labd-14-ene-11-one) is the main active ingredient in the Ayurvedic herb Coleus forskohlii.
Forskolin is an extract of an Ayurvedic herb that resensitizes cell receptors by activating the enzyme adenylcyclase and increasing the levels of cyclic AMP in cells.
Forskolin relaxes the bronchial muscles and may dangerously increase the potency or action of certain asthma drugs, including albuterol, theophylline, and beclomethasone.

Forskolin : by Ray Sahelian, M.D., Coleus forskohli for sex, asthma, glaucoma, hypertension, forskolin
Forskolin is a diterpene from the roots of the Indian plant Coleus forskohli which directly activates the adenylate cyclase and raises cyclic AMP levels in a variety of tissues.
Forskolin is a widely used biochemical tool that activates adenyl cyclase, thereby increasing intracellular concentration of cAMP, and thus activating the PKA signal transduction pathway.
Forskolin, a diterpene from the roots of an Indian plant, Coleus forskohlii, is a potent platelet aggregation inhibitor and has been examined for its effects on (a) tumor-induced human platelet aggregation and (b) pulmonary tumor colonization in mice.

 Supplement Update: Coleus Forskohlii
Forskolin's basic mechanism of action is that it increases the amount of cyclic AMP (adenosine monophosphate) in cells by activating an enzyme called adenylate cyclase.
Forskolin is actually patented by the Sabinsa corporation under US patent 5,804,596 for enhancing lean body mass which is what many athletes and weight trainers are trying to accomplish.
Forskolin has been shown to be safe and effective and has a great amount of potential as a sports supplement.

The decrease in PAF binding caused by forskolin was concomitant with a decrease in the physiological responses of platelets induced by PAF.
Forskolin's ability to relax smooth muscle in bronchial asthma is most probably due to an increase in cAMP, although forskolin has other anti-allergic activities such as inhibiting the release of histamine and the synthesis of allergic compounds.
Forskolin has also been shown to be a direct cerebral vasodialtor indicating that it may prove to be useful in cerebral bascular insufficiency and post-stroke recovery.

Forskolin has also been shown to counteract the decreased response of fat cells to epinephrine, associated with aging.
Forskolin is a known blood pressure lowering agent and is used in the management of hypertension, including ocular hypertension that leads to glaucoma4.
Preliminary studies in humans have shown that forskolin increases the contractility of the heart muscle without increasing oxygen consumption and that it is a vasodilator4,8.

 Forskolin Supplement Profile
Forskolin, along with a few select others (such as epinephrine), is the standard substance used in scientific studies when a lipolytic (fat burning) agent is needed (1-4).
Lipolytic hormones such as epinephrine (adrenalin) activate adenylate cyclase as well, but forskolin does not have the same CNS effects, so it essentially bypasses the step that is associated with the unwanted side effects (nervousness, restlessness) we find with other fat loss agents that function by increasing lipolytic hormone levels.
The typical dosage of forskolin is 25-60 mg per day divided between 2-3 doses, with 50-60 mg being the ideal range.

Herbal Descriptions - Forskolin - Coleus forskohili   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-17)
Forskolin is an important traditional Ayurvedic herb that has been a part of Indian medicine for centuries.
The effects of Forskolin last for only a short period, and there are concerns that use may lead to possible cardiovascular complications.
Forskolin would best be used under the supervision of a competent healthcare professional trained in its use.

The forskolin was removed, and the pieces of epithelium were maintained in a standard medium containing KT5720 for 72 hr.
Brief treatments with forskolin (15 min) or Br-cAMP (1 hr) could increase the density of RTK, such as ErbB receptors, inserted at the membrane surface, allowing the binding of GF such as GGF2.

Forskolin Lowering High Cholesterol Levels Reducing Cardio Lower Reduce
Forskolin may be helpful to control the underlying cause of glaucoma.
The sometimes successful use of forskolin to reduce intraocular pressure may be due to its unique ability to stimulate adenylate cyclase activity and increase cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) which regulates and activates critical enzymes required for the cellular energy required to move fluid out of the eye.
If you want to use forskolin to replace drugs that strengthen heart muscle contraction, extreme caution is also mandatory and physician cooperation essential.
