Fort Atkinson was built to keep the Winnebago Indians on Neutral Ground (a 40-mile-wide strip of land established by the Treaty of 1830) after their removal from Wisconsin in 1840, and to provide protection for them from the Sioux, Sauk, Fox and from white intruders on Indian land.
With their removal from Iowa, the reason for Fort Atkinson was removed as well and the last company of infantry marched out of its gates on February 14, 1849.
The Fort Atkinson Preserve is in Winneshiek County, approximately 175 miles northeast of Des Moines, 95 miles north of Cedar Rapids, 80 miles northwest of Dubuque and 65 miles northeast of Waterloo.

Fort Atkinson faced several obstacles, the most serious of which were location in an area almost devoid of building materials and firewood and a very small garrison of troops.

In 1827, the fort was abandoned; by the 1850s, when widespread American settlement began in the area, little remained of the fort.

1840: Fort Atkinson was erected under orders for its construction by the U.S. Government for the explicit purpose of protecting the Winnebago Indians against their enemies: the Sioux on the North, the Sacs and Foxes on the South, and the encroaching white settlers.
Fort Atkinson was erected under the supervision of Captain Isaac Lynde with Company F of the Fifth Infantry, a detachment of eighty-two officers and enlisted men.
Fort Atkinson continued to be a two company post for the next six years.

The Winnebago Indians who had lived a the fort had been removed from the northeast Iowa region that year, so the land was open to white settlement for the first time.
On May 31, 1840, a camp was made and named Atkinson in honor of the commanding officer in charge of the Winnebago resettlement efforts.
With their removal from Iowa, there was no longer a reason for Fort Atkinson and it was closed in 1849.

Here was Ft. Atkinson, the "Elysian Fields" of the 6th infantry, the first fort west of the Missouri, and the sole accomplishment of the Yellowstone Expedition of 1819.

Upon approval of a structure for the Award of Distinction by the Board of Directors of the Iowa Barn Foundation, a plaque signifying such recognition shall be presented to the owner or owners and shall be affixed to the structure in a prominent location.
The owner or owners of a structure receiving the award may voluntarily sign and record the standard easement of the Iowa Barn Foundation committing the structure to uses compatible with agricultural use and the owner or owners to maintaining the property.
The Iowa Barn Foundation’s Board of Directors prefers that barn roofs be replaced with a composition material or with wooden shingles in keeping with the barn’s original look.

Joseph Cretin of Dubuque visited the Indians and requested Bishop Loras to send Rev. Remingious Petiot to the Winnebago Indian Subagency,located five miles south of Fort Atkinson to serve as a resident missionary chaplain.
Later Father Cretin was allowed to return to the neutral ground where he built a stone and log church on a new location a half mile east of Fort Atkinson near one of the Indian villages.
