Fort Hoo, like Fort Darnet was built on the recommendations of the 1859 Royal Commission on an island covering the inner navigable channel of the Medway, Kent.
In WWII the fort was used as observation posts, with platforms and pillboxes built on top.
Currently the fort is in fair condition, but owned by the Ministry of Defence, and landing is not allowed.

The first Fort Crawford was a wooden structure built on an island in the Mississippi River at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, during 1816.

Fort Darnet was flooded in 1862 after a dam failed and cracks appeared in both forts.

Forts Pitt and Clarence were added in 1805 and then a ring of forts was built around the south, north and east of Chatham dockyard between the late 1870's and 1900.

In 1867 the forts were modified to one tier and the armament reduced to eleven 9" guns at Hoo Fort, and nine 9" guns and three 7" guns at Darnet.
The general plan of the fort is round with an open courtyard in the centre at the level of the first floor, out of which were the eleven casements for housing the guns.
The forts were completed and operational by 1872 and remained in the care of a Master Gunner until the First World War when they were disarmed and abandoned by the arm.

The embarrassing Dutch raid on the Medway in 1667 brought soldiers to Hoo, to man Cockham Wood Fort, but the fort was never needed and very little of it remains now.
The Hoo fort, like it's twin, Darnet Fort, was built in the 1860s as part of the defences against the expected Napoleonic invasion.
The fort remains in reasonably good condition and although it was disarmed before WW1 it remained Ministry of Defence property and cannot be visited.
