Fort Dearborn was a United States fort built on the Chicago River in 1803 under John Whistler on the site of present-day Chicago.
The Americans garrisoned the fort until 1823, when peace with the Indians led the garrison to be deemed redundant.
Part of the fort outline is marked by plaques and a line embedded in the sidewalk and road near the Michigan Avenue Bridge and Wacker Drive.

This 'massacre' is also known as the Battle of Fort Dearborn and it was a decisive victory for the British.
The fort commander Captain Nathan Heald ordered that all whiskey and gunpowder be destroyed so it wouldn't be taken by the local Indian tribes allied with the British, and then abandoned the fort.
Fort Dearborn was burned to the ground and the region remained devoid of US citizens until after the war was over.
