FCI Fort Dix is a large prison, confining over 4,000 prisoners in total, but the institution is divided into two separate compounds, an East and West side, with each side holding approximately 2,000 prisoners.

Fort Dix created a "refugee village" that became a temporary home for 4,025 Kosovars: An older man died there, a couple got married, friendships were formed and seven babies were born -- including one boy who was named Amerikan.
The majority of Kosovars brought through Fort Dix were considered the most "at risk." Many had serious health problems, lacked family in the United States or identifying papers.
