		Fort Dodge is a city and county seat of Webster County, Iowa, situated on the Des Moines River.
		Drywall was patented by a Fort Dodge resident, and the gypsum used to create the Cardiff Giant hoax of the late 19th century was mined at Fort Dodge.
		The Fort Dodge Municipal Band is the Karl King Band, named after well-known composer Karl L. King, who was the leader of the municipal band for fifty years before his death in 1971.

		Dodge did erect some sort of a fort in this immediate locality, but the reports of the United States war department say that the Fort Dodge of later days was established by Gen. Grenville M. Dodge in 1864, and that the site was selected by Col. Ford, of the Second Colorado cavalry.
		The sanitary arrangements at Fort Dodge were of the best character, and the fort usually boasted one of the finest garrisons in the country.
		When the fort was abandoned in 1882, the government left the property in charge of a custodian, who allowed the inclosure to be used as a cattle corral, and the buildings fell into decay.

		Dodge, after whom, along with his son Augustus Caeser Dodge, Fort Dodge was named, was described by Dragoon Lt. Albert M. Lea as "a splendid man, soldierly, erect, with an eagle eye, but lacking in the amenities and grammar." The Dragoons were flamboyant by any military standard.
		One of these may be seen at a monument to the Dragoons at the Fort Museum in Fort Dodge, only a stone throw from where the Dragoons passed in 1835.
		The Fort Dodge Dragoons are named in honor of the pioneering military unit that first explored central Iowa.
