  Lower Fort Garry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lower Fort Garry or "The Stone Fort", as it is known, was built in 1831 by the Hudson's Bay Company on the banks of the Red River, twenty miles north of Fort Garry.
The HBC had already built Fort Garry at the forks of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers in 1822, but one spring flood in 1826 was such a problem that the company's then governor, George Simpson, looked for a better location down river.
Between May and September, costumed interpreters recreate life at Lower Fort Garry in the early 1850's when Eden Colvile was inland governor of the HBC and in residence at the fort.

Fort Garry also known as Upper Fort Garry was a Hudson's Bay Company trading post at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers in what is now downtown Winnipeg.
It was rebuilt in 1836 by the HBC and named Upper Fort Garry to differentiate it from "the Lower Fort," or Lower Fort Garry, 32 km downriver, which was established in 1832.
Throughout the mid to late 1800s, Upper Fort Garry played a minor role in the actual trading of furs, but was central to the administration of the HBC and the surrounding settlement.

When the overseas regiment of the Fort Garry Horse was formed from the Canadian Cavalry Depot (formerly the 6th Bn) on 21 Jan 1916, the badge adopted was that of the 6th Bn, with the number removed and the scroll changed to read “FORT GARRY HORSE”.
The 4/7 RDG was allied with the Fort Garry Horse in 1921.
The ‘Fort Garry Suite” though not an official march, was composed by the unit by Roger Davidson to honour the connection of the Garrys with the bear “Winnie”, who was the inspiration for the character “Winnie the Pooh”.

Lower Fort Garry was built 30 km down the Red River from Fort Garry [Winnipeg] during the 1830s as the HUDSON'S BAY CO's administrative centre for RUPERT'S LAND.
It was hoped that the lower fort would be free from the spring flooding that beset the older community and would house a more respectable class of citizen.

After the flood of 1826 when the original Fort Garry was demolished, Govenor George Simpson (later to be Governor of Ruperts Land), for politcal reasons, decided to rebuild the fort downstream and in 1831 built Lower Fort Garry at its present location near Selkirk, Manitoba.
By 1853, the fort was proving to be too small for the increasing trade and it was extended to the north.

However, the fate of the fort had long been sealed before any consideration was given to straightening Main Street.
The land the fort rested on became more valuable than the fort itself and since it no longer represented the seat of power in the area, it was abandoned by 1882 and quickly fell into disrepair.
