Fort George was captured by the Americans in May 1813 at the Battle of Fort George.
The fort was retaken by the British in December.

 Fort Ontario, Oswego, NY -- A Site on a Revolutionary War Road Trip
Called "The Fort of the Six Nations," or "Fort Ontario," it was destroyed by the French under the Marquis de Montcalm in August 1756, along with all other British defenses at Oswego.
Despite the surrender at Yorktown in 1781 and the Treaty of Paris ending the war in 1783, the British reoccupied Oswego in 1782, rebuilt Fort Ontario for the third time and held it until 1796, when the fort was finally turned over to the United States.
Fort Ontario became an Army Post in 1903 and by 1941, the post had grown to 125 buildings.

The French destroyed this fort in 1756, as well as destroying Fort Oswego (built 1727) on the opposite bank of the Oswego River, and Fort George (built 1755) on high ground behind Fort Oswego.
Fort Ontario was regarrisoned as an infantry training center in 1903, and many new brick and wood-frame structures were built outside of the old fort.
Fort Ontario was finally abandoned as a military post in 1946, and developed as a state park in 1949.

In 1831, the name was changed in honor of Lady Frances Simpson (1812-1853), the first wife of Sir Giorge Simpson, and the cousin of Sir George, the governor in chief of the Hudson's Bay Company from 1820-1860.

To the American General Henry Dearborn across the river at Fort Niagara the time was right for an all-out invasion of Upper Canada.
On May 25, American batteries along the Niagara river and at Fort Niagara opened fire on Fort George damaging or destroying almost all the buildings within its walls.
To avoid the American army moving from the shores of Lake Ontario towards Fort George, Vincent retreated up the Niagara river to Queenston then cut north with detachments from Fort Erie and Queenston towards Burlington Heights (north of present day Hamilton) leaving the Niagara peninsula under US control.

To reinforce British presence at a strategic location, in 1755 Fort Ontario was constructed on an eminence at the easterly confluence of the Oswego River and Lake Ontario.
In 1756 the fort was destroyed by the French, and rebuilt by the British in 1759.

The King's 8th Regiment officially transferred from the Fort York campaign in 1991, and has grown from only 2 Companies (The Light Company - 6th Newmarket and 1st Grenadier Company - 58th Toronto) with only 30 members to the large size that it is today (9 Companies - 265 members).

We cannot recommend more highly the tours at the fort and all the staff that run them have some stories to tell of their own as well as those tested, tried and true ones from the regular tours.
While walking towards the main gates of the fort, another, different feeling got to me. The only way to describe it is the same feeling a kid gets on his way to the principal's office for being naughty.

The Northwest Company establish a strong point in the area in the 1780's along their "Voyageur Highway" which was a crucial part to the Company's trans-shipment of goods.
On June 1, 1830 the Governor of the Hudson Bay Company, Sir George Simpson visited the "Lac la Pluie" with his wife Lady Frances Ramsay Simpson and in honor of her visit, he renamed "Fort Frances" on September 25 of that same year.
