At the beginning of the 20th century the Northwest Territories was the homeland of Indians, Métis, and Inuit.
The Northwest Territories was linked to the Yukon Territory by the Dempster Highway, which connects Inuvik and other communities in the Mackenzie delta with Dawson in the Yukon Territory.
The remaining Dene land claims are in the southern half of the Northwest Territories and represent the southern half of Denendeh.

Fort Good Hope is located at 66'15'N latitude and 128'38'W longitude.
Located 805 air km northwest of Yellowknife and 145 km northwest of Norman Wells the community is situated on a peninsula between Jackfish Creek and the east bank of the Mackenzie River where the two meet.
Established in 1805, Fort Good Hope is the oldest settlement in the lower Mackenzie River Valley however it was moved and rebuilt several times until 1839 when the present location was created.

One of the territories of Arctic Canada, the Northwest Territories (NWT; French, les Territoires du Nord-Ouest) has a landmass of 1,171,918 square kilometers and a population of 42,944 as of January 1, 2005.
Quebec was also extended, in 1898, and Yukon was made a separate territory in the same year to deal with the Klondike Gold Rush, and remove the NWT government from administering the sudden boom of population, economic activity and influx of non-Canadians.
Devolution of powers to the territory was an issue in the Northwest Territories general election, 2003, and has been ever since the territory began electing members in 1881.

In 1859 he was given the task of setting up and directing the mission at Fort Good Hope, where he spent the last years of his life, although continuing to visit the numerous missions he had founded.
At Fort Good Hope Father Grollier lived in a house measuring 22 by 18 ft, which served as church, parlour, dining room, kitchen, and sleeping quarters.
Two years later Grollier died and in accordance with his wishes was buried between two Indians in the cemetery of the Fort Good Hope mission.

Fort Good Hope is situated on the MacKenzie River, 800 km northwest of Yellowknife, 20 km south of the Arctic Circle, and has a population of around 650 people, 80% of which are Dene, 10% Metis, and 10% white.

Not all northern pilots may need to carry satellite phones in all situations, but where communications are limited, and in the event of an emergency, we do encourage the practice of carrying a satellite phone or other means of communication that function independent of the aircraft's electrical systems.
