Fort Mackinac was a military outpost garrisoned from the late 18th century to the late 19th century on Mackinac Island in the U.S. state of Michigan.
During 1780-1781, Patrick Sinclair, the lieutenant governor of Michilimackinac constructed a new limestone fort on the limestone bluffs of Mackinac Island.
During the mid 19th century, the fort became an important staging area for exploration of the northern Michigan Territory, including the 1832 expedition under the command of Lewis Cass to explore the headwaters of the Mississippi River.

Fort Holmes was a military outpost in 1834 located in Oklahoma Indian Territory on the South Canadian River.
The land where the fort is believed to have been has never been cultivated or cleared; anything that was left by the residents is still there waiting to be discovered.
Holmes, the fort was built in 1834 and it was home to two companies of infantry and was used by several troops passing through this rugged Indian Territory.

The Holmes House location is not spectacular, and it is possible that this fort was succeeded after a short period by the better-placed camp at Piercebridge.
Three-quarters of a mile south-east of Piercebridge (Durham), at Holmes House farm, on the south bank of the Tees, a fort is represented by a single broad ditch enclosing an area of about 270 ft. from east to west by 240 ft. from north to south.

Fort Mackinac was first built by the British in 1780-81.
At the outbreak of the War of 1812 the British seized the island and built Fort George.
This fort, which you see to the north beyond the Rifle Range, was renamed Fort Holmes by the Americans who reoccupied the island in 1815.

Here in 1812 on the island's highest point, a blockhouse and stockade were built by the British and named Fort George.
After the war the Americans renamed the post in honor of Maj. Holmes who was killed during the American assault in 1814.
The fort was not maintained by the Americans however.
