	Rock Island, the island, History: Fort Armstrong
		Fort Armstrong was built upon a rocky cliff on the lower point of an island near the center of the river, a little way above; the shores on each side formed of gentle slopes of prairie, extending back to bluffs of considerable height, made it one of the most picturewque scenes in the western country.
		Catlin’s painting of Fort Armstrong with its flag flying on its 130 foot pole, whitewashed walls and blockhouses, is the earliest surviving artistic rendering of the fort.
		The surface of the island is generally waving, and is pervaded by a broad valley passing centrally and longitudinally two-thirds the length of the island.

	Fort Adams - History
		Fort Pulaski was located on an island at the mouth of the Savannah River, and no less an engineer than Robert E. Lee had earlier pronounced it to be impervious to any artillery that could be placed within effective range.
		Fort Pulaski surrendered on April 11, 1862, a date that also could be said to mark the obsolescence of the masonry forts of the Third System.
