Fort Johnson, on the Mohawk Turnpike, is a postoffice and railway station of the New York Central R.R. (with prepaid freight office).
Johnson moves from Johnson's settlement at present Amsterdam (south side) to the Fort Johnson property, where he had built a wooden house, which was his second valley house.
Fort Johnson was one of the most important British-American army posts of the period and figured in many of the British-American army movements up the Mohawk valley against Canada.

1815 General Swift noted that “Fort Johnson is little better than a battery in ruins, the gale of 1813 having nearly destroyed it,” and he recommended the abandonment of the site and the construction of a new work, to mount 12 guns, a short distance in rear of it.
1861 To aid in the reduction of Fort Sumter, a mortar battery was installed at this point, and at four o'clock on the morning of April 12th, 1861, a shell from a mortar was exploded over Fort Sumter, and this was the signal for the bombardment of Sumter to begin.
The Fort proper mounted 20 guns and mortars of which 8 were of the heaviest caliber - 8 and 10 inch Columbiads and 6 and 7 inch rifles.

Colonel Johnson decided to remove from the battlefield and start their march back to where their boats lay hidden, as the presence a large force of militia was closer than he had thought.

At early dawn yesterday from 700 to 1,000 men in barges attacked Fort Johnson and were handsomely and thoroughly repulsed, with the loss to the enemy of 140 prisoners, with their arms and accouterments and 5 barges, and many killed and wounded.

The old building was part of a hospital that was built here when Fort Johnson was planned to be a customs site for immigrants entering the country in the early 20th century.
The fort that once stood here covered this magazine with earth to protect it from shelling, and when that got covered up, people forgot about the magazine underneath.
This is an old 18th century plantation house that was moved by barge from way up the river down to Fort Johnson when the land was sold out from under it.

It was home to William Johnson, the former Superintendent General of Indian Affairs and last Baronet of New York, during the French and Indian War (1754-1760).

 Old Fort Johnson
One of the small drawings done by Guy that survived the fire in 1773 was a rendering in 1758 of Fort Johnson and its various outbuildings.
He took a leading role in many raids and frontier battles, working with both Sir John Johnson and Col. John Butler and their respective corps, but always his first concern was to act as an Indian nationalist: whatever he believed was best for his own people governed his actions.
He was an active participant in the Battle of Oriskany in 1777 and received much of the blame, perhaps erroneously, for the conduct of the Indians at the so-called “Cherry Valley Massacre” in 1778.

During the Union occupation of Nashville (1862-65), the Capitol was tranformed into Fortress Andrew Johnson.
The artillery located there never had to be fired in battle, but were used for drills and celebrations.
Designed by William Strickland, who moved here from Philadelphia to supervise construction, the capitol is one of the most highly regarded Greek Revival style buildings in the nation.
