I may add that Fort Atkinson was constructed of log pickets with loop-holes for musketry, with block-houses on the south-east and north-west corners, with about an acre of ground within the enclosure.
A hand-drawn map of Fort Koshkonong dating from 1835 is housed in the Hoard Historical Museum.
The D.A.R. marked the fort's location with a monument in 1907, and a reconstruction of the fort was built in 1966 at Rock River Park in Fort Atkinson.

According to Don Bush, regional fisheries supervisor with the Department of Natural Resources at Janesville, Koshkonong was transformed from a deep-water marsh to a big, shallow lake by the Indianford dam on the Rock River, which was completed in 1917.
Koshkonong has had a carp problem for decades, and stocking of game fish is tied to carp removal.

As the war chief of the band, it is hardly surprising that Black Hawk himself led attacks on two white forts in northwestern Illinois, nearly a hundred miles from his main encampment at Lake Koshkonong.
After besieging the fort for much of the afternoon, Black Hawk sent the warriors to gather badly needed foodstuffs, horses, livestock, and other supplies from the nearby settlers' cabins and farms.

Man, I miss Fort and the friends and family I have there...although, here I don't get the snow, so I guess it's an even trade-off...it's not like I really liked my family or even had that many friends.

The Black Hawk Trail followed the Rock River from Rock Island, Illinois to the east and northeast side of Lake Koshkonong and on through Fort Atkinson (also known as Fort Koshkonong) to Madison, Wisconsin.
The abundance of hardwood timber, plenty of marsh hay and fine fishing in the Koshkonong Creek were an answer to their quest.

Lucien Caswell was an early mover and shaker in Fort Atkinson.
Born in 1827 in Vermont, Lucien lost his father Beal at age 3 when his dad was crushed by a falling tree during a community wood cutting bee held to gather wood for each neighbor.
He then moved into the little settlement of Fort Atkinson, which he would serve for the next 67 years at the local, state and national levels.

It'll suck that you wont be at Fort, but at least you'll have some fun.
