Fort McCoy encompasses 59,750 acres (24, 180 hectares) within what is known as the Driftless Area, part of the State left untouched by glaciers.
Fort McCoy began its efforts to protect the Karner blue nearly 2 years before the butterfly was listed as an endangered species in 1992.

Fort McCoy, in fact, is one of 15 of what the U.S. Department of Defense calls "Power Projection Platforms," with the mission of mobilizing Reserve and National Guard units for any situation.
Fort McCoy also housed the Resettlement Center for Cuban Refugees from May to October 1980, processing more than 15,000 Cubans who came to the United States on the "Freedom Flotilla" after Fidel Castro emptied his prisons.

In response to the terrorist events of September 11, 2001, Fort McCoy implemented certain security measures to better safeguard installation facilities and the people who train, work and live on the installation.
Wisconsin State law does not require that the vehicle registration be physically maintained certain type of vehicles, however, in order to receive an Temporary Visitor Pass, the vehicle operator will be required to provide the original copy of the vehicle registration to the access control point personnel.

In 1910, the army renamed the entire tract "Camp Bruce E. McCoy" for Robert Bruce McCoy, a retired major general, who first proposed the area as a training ground and bought part of the property on which the fort stands.

Two of the five maintenance battalions in the Army Reserve, the 521st Maintenance Battalion at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, and the 387th Maintenance Battalion at Fort Hunter Liggett, California, are implementing a maintenance training program called Operation Platinum Wrench (OPW).
