  Fort Myer, Virginia
The earliest military establishment in the vicinity of Fort Myer were the earthbound fortifications built in 1812 along the east bank of the Potomac, where the Pentagon now stands.
Overlooking Washington, D.C., and Georgetown to the north and the Virginia countryside to the south, Fort Whipple was considered one of the strongest fortifications built to defend the Union's capital.
Today, Fort Myer is under the jurisdiction of the commanding general, U.S. Army Military District of Washington, but has its own Army Garrison commander who provides housing, service and support to thousands of soldiers, sailors and airmen working in a wide variety of agencies throughout the nation's capital.

Fort Greble, as part of the defensive cordon, was located four miles south of the Mall of the City of Washington (but still within the District of Columbia).
As Myer stated in his 1869 annual report, the post "is well located for the purpose for which it is occupied, on the heights overlooking the valley of the Potomac, whence ranges for near and distant practice may be had from five to thirty miles" (Scheips 1974).
The main gate for Fort Whipple (and later Fort Myer) from the 1870s to the 1940s stood at the base of Washington Avenue at the intersection of Sherman Road and Fenton Circle.

Fort McPherson, another Arlington County fort, deserves mention for it was intended to function in tandem with Fort Whipple.
Fort Whipple was among the newest additions to the defenses of Washington at that time having been completed in June 1863.
As Fort Whipple developed into a permanent installation, and underwent development as Fort Myer in subsequent years, the Army began planting trees and vegetation in a manner reflective of urban settings of the time.

Fort Whipple, on 256 acres, was one of the stronger fortifications built to defend the Union capital across the Potomac River.
The post was renamed Fort Myer the next year, primarily to honor the late chief signal officer, but also to eliminate confusion created by the existence of another Fort Whipple in Arizona.
The first military test flight of an aircraft was made from the Fort Myer parade ground on Sept. 9, 1908, when Orville Wright kept one of his planes in the air for a minute and 11 seconds.

Fort Myer is now the garrison home of a couple of cavalry troops that have seen bitter fighting on the frontier, and have been placed in this, one of the pleasantest posts in the country, as a sort of reward for their hard knocks in their country's service.
Photographs of Fort Myer during this period show evidence of Victorian landscaping around the Officers' quarters, open parade grounds, street improvements, and the general urban feeling of the Fort (see Figure 21).
The equestrian training area at Fort Myer is no longer visible, but the continued commitment to cavalry training in the 1920s and 1930s kept the area south of today's Summerall Field an open and free of development.

The Wright Flyer demonstrations at Fort Myer, Virginia on September 3, 1908.
This bid came as a response to a War Department request issued a month earlier for a "Heavier-than-air Flying Machine." While Wilbur Wright went off to Paris to promote the Wright Flyer, Orville Wright stayed in Dayton, Ohio to design a plane for the Army Signal Corps.
By August Orville's plane was ready and he headed to Fort Myer, Virginia, where the air trials were to take place.

 Mortuary affairs collection - September 11: Bearing Witness to History
Context: The 311th Quartermaster Company (Mortuary Affairs), a U.S. Army Reserve unit from Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, was rushed to Fort Myer to assist with the recovery of remains from the September 11 Pentagon attack.
After completing that task, the company shifted operations to nearby Fort Myer, Virginia, and went to work identifying and cleaning personal effects to be returned to survivors and the families of victims.
