Fort Niagara is located at the mouth of the Niagara River at Lake Ontario opposite Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont. Gulls, primarily Bonaparte's, create a mass exodus (sometimes over 3,000 birds) into the river in the morning and out of the river in the evening (as they roost on Lake Ontario in the evenings).
The park has many tall oaks, which are the home to (often year-round) Red-headed Woodpeckers, and ornamental fruit trees near the entrance toll gate (no toll in November and December) and along the seaway trail, which may hold Bohemian Waxwing (nearly annual in November or December) or Pine Grosbeaks (as recent as 2001).
Wilson-Tuscarora State Park is a well-preserved natural area for many varieties of plants and wildlife, encompassing 395 acres of mature woods, open meadows and marshland.

Governor George E. Pataki today instructed New York State Parks Commissioner Bernadette Castro to honor Major Michael Joseph Brown's request to be buried at the Old Fort Niagara State Park.
It served as the primary post thru French and British colonial rule and was later used by the U.S. Army as its Fort Niagara burial ground throughout the 19th Century.
It became known as the "1812 cemetery" because casualties and veterans of that war were interred at Old Fort Niagara.

A $2 million grant to develop a new visitors center and museum at Fort Niagara State Park was announced May 23 by Gov. George Pataki.
The structures are 1930s-era buildings outside Old Fort Niagara which were part of the "modern" fort that existed from 1871 until 1963 when it was decommissioned.
The building was saved in 1999 from becoming a private upscale restaurant and deli/cafe when the state removed it from a private Youngstown developer's plan to convert it and three largely unused buildings from "new" Fort Niagara into a convention and conference center complex.

Nearly 35 years after the Army post closed, the fort -- not to be confused with Old Fort Niagara with its "British Redcoats" which adjoins it -- could be turned into a moneymaking, privately-operated commercial development if the state approves a Youngstown developer's plan currently on the table.
W. Kirk Hastings wants to lease the four surviving mostly empty buildings in Fort Niagara State Park for 40 years and convert them into a year-round hotel complex with 76 rooms and suites, a fancy restaurant and associated businesses.
The state, which has custody over unused and underused properties, said Hastings' proposal was the only response it got when it publicly advertised for developers late last year.
