Fort Ord is at the transition between the mountains of the Santa Lucia Range and the Sierra de la Salinas to the south and southeast, respectively, and the lowlands of the Salinas River Valley to the north.
The geology of Fort Ord generally reflects this transitional condition; older, consolidated rock is exposed at the ground surface near the southern base boundary and becomes buried under a northward-thickening sequence of poorly consolidated deposits to the north.
At Fort Ord, the Salinas basin is composed of relatively flat-lying to gently dipping poorly consolidated sediments.

Fort Ord's current drinking water wells are far removed from the landfill or other sources of contamination, drilled to deeper, uncontaminated aquifers, and, therefore, are unlikely to be contaminated in the future.
The Fort Ord sanitary landfill and areas of light industrial activity were being studied as possible sources of this surface soil contamination and the groundwater contamination detected in installation supply wells and in the City of Marina's backup supply well.

During the 1950's and 1960's Fort Ord was a staging area for units departing for war, and at one time had 50,000 troops on the installation.
In 1992, elements from Fort Ord, and Marines from Camp Pendleton participated in quelling the 1992 Los Angeles Riots.
The military still has a presence at Fort Ord, in the form of several California Army National Guard units, facilities administrated by the Presidio of Monterey, and the continued operation of the base PX and Commissary to cater for retirees who chose to settle in the area and are entitled to shop at such facilities.
