The chief reason why the French abandoned Fort Duquesne, was because their Indian allies who had been instrumental in defeating Braddock in 1755 removed from the area.
The character of the structure and the location of the new fort were probably determined upon before Forbes left on his return for Philadelphia, which he did on the 3d of December.
Although Fort Pitt was occupied in 1760, it was not finished until the summer of 1761 under Col. Bouquet.

The British objective had been the location of Fort Duquesne, not the fortification itself, and it was a jubilant group which gave thanks on November 26, 1758, the day after arriving at the smoldering remains of the fort.
Most wilderness forts were built to protect against Indian attacks and the use of logs sufficed, but Fort Pitt was designed to protect against French cannons.
The installation was large and it is estimated that seventeen forts the size of Fort Duquesne would easily fit on the parade ground of Fort Pitt.

Because of an apparent oversight in the Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel construction plan, a new high-speed connector ramp that is part of a main detour will be open only part time this summer.
Traffic will be diverted onto the eastbound city lanes of Fort Pitt Boulevard, pass through three traffic signals, and be sent down what is tantamount to the old Wood Street entry ramp to the Parkway East toward Monroeville.
Closing the connector nightly for the duration of the project -- possibly until Halloween when the Fort Pitt Bridge exit ramp is to be completed -- will put stress on city streets and on patrons of a myriad of sports and special events.

Some time this afternoon, Ken Andreatta plans to pull rank and inaugurate the smooth, new concrete lanes of the Fort Pitt Bridge, and he plans to stop his sport utility vehicle in the middle of the bridge for a minute, too.
For the same reason, the Parkway East (Interstate 376 West) ramp leading onto the Fort Pitt Bridge will be limited to one lane rather than two, promising more traffic jams for motorists who don't opt to continue detouring for a while longer.
The on-ramp, which has been two lanes since the Fort Pitt project started, was to have been back to a single lane by 6 a.m.
