Fort San Felipe del Morro, or El Castillo Del Morro, is an sixteenth-century fort that lies on the northernmost point of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
On the other side of the entrance of the bay, a smaller fort known as "El Cañuelo" supported Fort San Felipe del Morro in defending the entrance to San Juan's bay.
The fort was begun in 1540 by Spanish settlers to defend the port of San Juan.

This fort was occupied by the Moors, who named it Mayrit (from which Magerit, then Madrid) and around which the borough of Madrid developed in the following centuries.
This king ordered the main mosque within the fort's walls to be "purified" and consecrated as a Catholic church under the guidance of the Virgin of the Almudena, the name deriving from a religious icon found near the "almudín" or wheat deposit.

The fort was equipped with 100 guns and a garrison of 300 soldiers.
The Burford was the closest ship to San Felipe, and was being hit by some of the Spanish guns, but she had command of the lower shore battery and offered protection to the landing party.
