Fort Simpson, in the Northwest Territories, is a town on an island at the confluence of the Mackenzie and Liard Rivers, both traditionally trade routes for the Hudson's Bay Company and the native Dene people of the area.
Fort Simpson is the hub of the Deh Cho region and is the gateway to the scenic Nahanni River.
Fort Simpson can be reached by air, water and road and has full secondary and elementary school service.

In 1876, the District of Keewatin, at the centre of the territory, was separated from it.

There are sideroads to Kakisa and Jean Marie River, and "suburban" Fort Simpson occupies most of the highway between the junction and the crossing of the Liard River 9.2 miles (14.7 km) east.
The highway was originally a portion of the Mackenzie Highway; this status ended with extension of the highway northwest from Enterprise, first as a route around Great Slave Lake to Yellowknife, and then west to Fort Simpson.
Adjacent to Fort McPherson and Tsiigehtchic, the highway must cross the Peel River, Arctic Red River and Mackenzie River by means of ferries in summer (June to October) and ice bridges in the winter (November to April or early May).

While turning final for runway 31 at Fort Simpson, the flight crew advised the Flight Service Station that they were attempting a forced landing on a road.
The captain decided that they would refuel at Fort Simpson on the next shuttle flight; nonetheless, since the flight crew considered the cockpit fuel gauges unreliable, the captain requested that the first officer confirm the fuel quantity using a dip-stick.
The previous two flights to Fort Simpson had taken 35 minutes; however, the captain still felt that there was enough fuel remaining to complete the flight to Fort Simpson.

We had the summer free and since our youngest son is a pilot for Simpson Air in the Northwest Territories, we thought this would be the perfect time to visit him and see the country at the same time.
We checked the weather for Peace River and High Level, Alta., and Fort Simpson, N.W.T. It was VFR for the whole area, so we filed for Fort Simpson and departed Villeneuve at 12:35 pm.
