Fort Stanton was named for Captain Henry W. Stanton who helped lead an expedition against the Apaches in January of 1855 near the Rio Penasco, or modern day Mayhill.
The name Fort Stanton was only meant to be a temporary designation, which obviously was never changed.
Although the Confederates were able to gain control of the fort, the single company stationed there was unable to control the Mescalero Apaches who ultimately forced the troops to abandon the fort.

Beginning in 1855 and continuing until the end of the 19th century, fort Stanton provided protection to the civilian population of Southern New Mexico and played a significant role in controlling the Mescalero Apache.
He is a member of the Friends of Fort Selden, Fort Stanton, Inc., the Ninth and Tenth Horse Cavalry Association, and an adjunct faculty member of El Paso Community College where he teaches U.S. History.

The Secretary of War in 1869-1870 felt the Fort was totally unnecessary, but the settlers felt protected from marauding Indians and unscrupulous traders with the Fort nearby.
In 1953, drugs for the treatment of tuberculosis were available and Fort Stanton was transferred to the State of New Mexico, along with some 27,000 acres.
That program ended at Fort Stanton in 1995, and the facility is now used as a minimum security location for women prisoners.

The Ninth Cavalry was stationed at Fort Stanton to control the Apache Indians.
Since it closed as an army post, Fort Stanton has been used as a hospital, a school and a correctional facility.
Stanton is about 25 miles from Ruidoso -- on the way to Lincoln.

1861     Fort was abandoned to Confederate soldiers.  Retreating troops set fire to fort but rain extinguished the effort.  Mexican, Indian, and Anglo settlers cannibalized fort for supplies.
Cushing and Yeager leave the fort with 32 Buffalo Soldiers and attack an Indian “rancheria” in the Guadalupe Mountains recovering most of Casey’s stock.  In December Cushing and Yeager again lead a force of 35 buffalo soldiers and 28 civilians against the Apache in the Guadalupe Mountains.  Yeager is wounded.
1896     With the ending of the Indian Wars, Fort Stanton was no longer a major player on the frontier.  By 1893 the occupancy of the fort was down to fifteen.  In August 1896 the fort was officially decommissioned.

 FORT STANTON - New Mexico Ghost Town
Named for Capt. Henry W. Stanton, who lost his life in a battle with Indians in the Sacramentomountains on January 19, 1855.
After 1896 the Army turned the buildings and site over to the US Public Health Service, which established the Fort Stanton Marine Hospital for the treatment of members of the US Merchant marine who were suffering from tuberculosis.
In 1953, the federal government turned the area around the fort back to the state for use as a hospital, and a year or so later the federal government reclaimed the land for the Department of the interior, permitting the state health department to continue the use of the buildings as a hospital.FORT STANTON CAVE.
