Fort Stanwix was a colonial fort erected in 1758 by British General John Stanwix, at the location of present-day Rome, New York.
In 1768, Fort Stanwix was the site of an important treaty conference between the British and the Iroquois, arranged by William Johnson.
The British failure to capture the fort and proceed down the Mohawk Valley was a severe setback and eventually led to the defeat of General John Burgoyne at the Battle of Saratoga.

The fort fell into disrepair until early in the American Revolution, when it was rebuilt by the patriots and called Fort Schuyler.

The stand by an American garrison at Fort Stanwix during August 1777 was chiefly responsible for the repulse of the western wing of the British invasion of the northern Colonies from Canada, and checked the possibility of a loyalist uprising in the Mohawk Valley.
By the Treaty of Fort Stanwix the Iroquois ceded a vast territory south and east of the Ohio River, as far west as the mouth of the Tennessee.
Fort Stanwix was situated at the Oneida Carrying Place, a key spot on the route between the Great Lakes and the Mohawk River, and was built originally during the French and Indian War but played no significant part in this conflict.

American militia and Oneida allies tried to come to the aid of Fort Stanwix, but were cut off in an ambush at Oriskany, considered one of the bloodiest engagements of the war.
Fort Stanwix is also a site where Americans developed their own sense of Indian Affairs.

After the War, several important treaties with the Iroquois were signed at the fort, including the Fort Stanwix Treaty of 1784 and the Treaty of Canandaigua in 1794.
Fort Dayton was named after Elias Dayton, a gallant and meritorious officer in the Revolutionary War who was sent by General Schuyler to construct the fort in the fall of 1776.
It was at this fort that General Herkimer assembled his troops in August 1777 for their march to relieve the patriots at Fort Stanwix under siege by British force.

 The Patriot Resource: Battle of Saratoga
On August 4th and 5th, snipers fired on the fort as the Indians formed a cordon around the fort and nearly everyone else was on work details.
They made camp on August 5 about ten miles from Fort Stanwix and Herkimer sent runners ahead to inform Colonel Gansevoort of their approach and to request that a sortie be sent out from the fort at their arrival.
Firing was then heard from Ft. Stanwix and it was guessed that the sortie had been mustered, but the reinforcements that soon arrived were actually Tories.

They reached Fort Dayton by three o'clock, and learned that Learned's Massachusetts troops were on the way, led by General Benedict Arnold.
There were many grave problems: Fort Stanwix had been destroyed by fire and flooding, and was abandoned; the troops were scattered in a thin line at various posts from Fort Dayton to Schenectady; supplying and provisioning the garrisons was a logistical headache.
