The approach to the fort was constricted to a strip of beach 60 yards wide.

During this period the garrison was host at frequent intervals to officers on leave, citizens of Charleston, and even many ladies, who came to see the scars of the April battle, to admire the drill, or to observe the preparations.
At the end of June 1863, Fort Sumter was garrisoned with 5 companies (perhaps 500 men) of the First South Carolina Artillery, under the command of Col. Alfred Rhett.
Though one angle of the fort was gained and held for a time, the attack was repulsed.

It was heavily fortified to defend the harbor, with the fortifications centered on Fort Wagner.
It was the scene of heavy fighting during the Union Army's campaign to capture Charleston, and is perhaps best known today as the scene of the ill-fated assault by the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, an African-American regiment.
However, a greater danger to the old fort, and the lighthouse, are plans to commercially develop the 125 acres (506,000 m²) of high ground on Morris Island as a luxury residential area.

 Battery Wagner, the Assault of July 18, 1863
His goal was to capture the Battery and the remainder of the low, sandy, flea infested island (know locally as coffin island due to its use as a Lazzaretto and leper colony prior to the war).
The fort was held by a small garrison of Confederate Infantry and Artillary and protected by a narrow approach up the beach, constricted by a marshy creek which funneled the soldiers onto a strip of sand a few hundred feet wide.
S.C. Artillary was positioned on the right flank of the fort, in the sand dunes so as to sweep the front wall of the Fort with Cannister.

His secondary argument is the belief that the regiment was not sent to lead the charge on Fort Wagner in order to be sacrificed for the white soldiers that would follow.
He focuses on the fact that the commanding officers, in planning the attack on Fort Wagner, did not choose "Negro" troops over white troops to lead the attack because of beliefs that "Negro" troops were expendable.

Published by Baronet Litho Co., Inc., Johnstown, NY old Colonial farmhouse and fort built in 1750 stands on the upper side of the highway a little less than two miles west of Nelliston.
The old and the new are easily identified in this instance as the original building is of stone, the addition which is of wood being an elongation of the original structure.
The pioneer settler was Johan Peter Wagner, who with his wife, Margaretha Laucs (Loucks), both Palatines, came to settle in West Camp, a Palatine settlement on the west bank of the Hudson River, just north of where Saugerties is now situated.

In a few moments signals are made from the top of the look-out, and soon generals and colonels commanding divisions and brigades were seen galloping to the head-quarters of the commanding general.

He died on the ramparts of Battery Wagner which was an assault his unit had made on the 18th of July 1863 and all the world was watching what these fl soldiers were going to do once led into combat.
Battery Wagner happened to be their second action, but the nature of the assault and the troops he was leading at the time of his death was incredibly news worthy.
Shaw was killed in the assault on Fort Wagner, SC, and was buried in a common grave with other members of the regiment killed in the battle.

The bombardment of the fort by the iron-clads and our land-batteries on Morris Island commenced at noon that day, and lasted till the evening.
and their heroic though ill-fated attack on Fort Wagner is retold in the 1989 film "Glory." A monument in Boston Commons honors their service and memory.

Unlike other forts, Wagner was not built of bricks and mortar, but of sand and palmetto trees.
Union leaders sent four monitors (ironclads) near the fort to coordinate a bombardment with shore batteries on Fort Wagner.
Even with all of the shelling, damage to the fort was minimal because the sand ended up absorbing much of the blasting from the shells.
