Fort Williams is an Endicott era fort in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and was built to guard the southern approaches to Portland harbor.
Fort Griswold is in Groton, Connecticut and was captured by the British during the American Revolution and is one of the best preserved 18th Century forts in the country.

He returned to the Philippines in 1916 in command of the Provisional Infantry Brigade and of Fort William McKinley.

When the Civil War broke out, 18-year-old William McKinley quit his job as a postal clerk in Poland, Ohio, and enlisted as a private in Company E, of the Twenty-third Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
The men had eaten only a scanty breakfast, and he knew that as the day wore on the Buckeyes were growing weaker.
He lost one team of mules to Confederate gunners, but did not return to the rear of the brigade until his fellow soldiers had been properly fed under the most adverse conditions.

His records also indicated that he was posted at Pettit Barracks and was in Cebu before ending up at Fort McKinley.

At the opening of the Civil War, Alcatraz and Fort Point were the only fortified posts on the Pacific Coast, the first military organization to arrive at Alcatraz for station being Company H, Stewart's Third Artillery, in December, 1858.
On the 26th the news was received of the fall of Fort Sumter, but the whole Coast was informed of the following order: "In compliance with special order No. 86, War Department, Adjutant-General's office, Washington, March 23, 1861, I hereby assume command of this department.
Artillery from Fort Point and Benicia were sent to Alcatraz, and a detachment was ordered in from Honey Lake to join their company at Alcatraz.

This "is a set of photos of the quarters we lived in at Ft. McKinley as they appeared in 1945, when my Dad returned as part of the PhilRyCom Staff that was planning the invasion of Japan.
He was delighted to establish contact with his former soldiers, and was able to help many of them after the war.
