Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | A puzzling betrayal
This is not the beginning of some in-house south Belfast joke but sums up the current predicament of Fortnight magazine, the arts, culture and politics review that has been covering life in the Troubles-torn north of Ireland since the early 1970s.
Fortnight has also provided a window for academics, journalists, opinion formers, politicians on corners unvisited by the conventional electronic and print media.
What irony that on this weekend, the seventh anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, a magazine that embodies political, social and cultural inclusivity, that has given equal value to various traditions and identities, is denied public funding.

The Mavens' Word of the Day   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-07-08)
Not having been born here, but across the Atlantic, the word "fortnight" for a two-week period was common usage (until I moved here, where I hardly ever hear it).
Fortnight comes from the Middle English form fourtenight, which is a contracted form of the Old English feowertyne niht (with accents omitted), meaning 'fourteen nights'.
While the term fortnight is, as you say, in very common use in Great Britain, in America it is less frequent, and is considered more of a formal or literary term.

Slugger O'Toole: Cutting Fortnight: a flight from political argument?
While I sympathise with those who work for Fortnight, it has to be said that the magazine had lost a great deal of its relevance despite glossy features on lapdancing and the like under Malachi's editorship.
Perhaps it was felt Fortnight had even lost its political edge - it had become a platform for a small cadre of narrow minded journalists to vent their spleen and puff one another up.
Fortnight actually received little money from ACNI proportionately, but their support was vital and, despite my respect for ACNI staff, I disagree with the decision to withdraw funding.

Dear Word Detective: I recently made mild fuss with a friend of mine about the origins of the word "fortnight." I thought it was simply an abbreviated form of "fourteen nights." He believes that it was started during a time of war.
His thought is that it was the time period required of a soldier to stay at a fort, hence the term "fortnight." -- M. Bauman, via the internet.
"Fortnight" itself is pretty rare in the U.S., although it is still in common use in Britain.
