Strictly speaking, the Fortune 500 is a list compiled by Fortune magazine raking the top 500 public corporations of the US as measured by their gross revenue.
In today's business world the corporations that make up the Fortune 500 wield enormous power and influence government policy on a regular basis, as is evidenced by the appointment of Henry M Paulson, CEO of Goldman Sachs, as Treasury Secretary for the United States.
Even more impressive, with revenues of US$ 9.1 trillion, if the Fortune 500 were seen as a nation they would have the second largest economy in the world, bigger than the economies of the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Japan combined.

 Fortune 500 | Introduction
In a sense, the 500 represents the bedrock of American business, and every list is like a core sample of the year's corporate geology: Each contains traces of the economy that produced it.
The 500 has always been a blend of companies that seem perpetually to tower over the rest (General Motors, Exxon, and more than 100 others that were on the list in 1955 remain there today) and companies that stay for a while before fading away or succumbing to the competition.
In this special FORTUNE 500 issue, as always, our writers have ferreted out the most intriguing tales behind the numbers.
