Topic: Fortune My Foe

  Silhouette (Dominic Fortune foe)
Believing that the "Dominic" in question was the adventurer Dominic Fortune (the only Dominic on the guest list), he confronted Fortune and his companion Sabbath Raven at a bar with his friend Harry, but Fortune knocked Harry out with one blow.
As Dominic Fortune set after the blimp which the other Dominic had imprisoned Sir Reginald aboard of, the Silhouette again appeared to confront him, still believing him to be his foe.
Fortune knocked him out again, remarking "If I wasn't in a hurry, I'd tie you into tiny little knots and send you to a boy scout troop." Ultimately, Fortune saved Sir Reginald.

Although each member is a soloist in his or her own right, Les Witches plays together as an egoless unit that does what good consort is meant to do-to produce quality music that entertains as well as delights the senses.
A good example is the title track, "Fortune my Foe," an anonymous English folk tune that was often set for solo lute, but older versions give it the subtitle "The Hanging Song," making its origins rather obvious.
The use of viols and recorders on "The First Witches Dance" is remeniscent of the psychedelic guitar of Jimi Hendrix, creating a sound that suggests the altered states of consciousness induced by the brews of ancient magic and its ceremonial dances.

My mind shall be: virtue to use, vice to refuse.
Fortune cannot, with all her power and skill, Enforce my heart to think thee any ill. Live thou in bliss, and banish death to Hell; All careful thoughts see thou from thee expel: As thou dost wish, thy love agrees to be.
My mouth that once knew laughter and spoke with grace and purpose now utters only curses upon those who have banished me from your eyes.

Les Witches' Fortune My Foe, subtitled "Music of Shakespeare's Time," is undeniably an educational experience.
The music is presented as authentically as possible, according to the liner notes, by the Les Witches ensemble who apply their respective violin, lute, harpsichord and recorders with great skill.
Maybe peace and harmony are something else for us to learn by listening to a well-played lute, violin, recorder and harpsichord.

Dowland, The York Waits, English Renaissance Music
John Dowland (1563-1626) is one of a bare handful of English composers from before the twentieth century who is generally considered worthy of note.
Of particular note is "I saw my Lady weepe" from the Second Book of Songs, a new song that was paired with "Flow my teares," the version of the original pavan for voice; the two bracket the seven pavans of the cycle as the last part of the collection.
(Every country has one, you know.) The music collected in Fortune My Foe is exactly contemporaneous with Dowland's cycle, but of quite a different character, which leads me to believe that the obsession with woe was, indeed, a courtly thing.

The tunes in the live set are interwoven with story and narrative, making for a dramatic and moving evening's entertainment; on the CD, however, the music by itself is able to tell a good story, bringing us close to events which we are increasingly revisiting and reassessing.
