Forward compatibility - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Forward compatibility (sometimes confused with extensibility) is the ability of a system to accept input intended for later versions of itself.
Forward compatibility is harder to achieve than backward compatibility, since, in the backward case, the input data format is known whereas a forward compatible system needs to cope gracefully with an unknown future data format or requests for unknown future features.
An example of forward compatibility is the specification that a web browser ignore HTML tags not recognised.

Forward compatibility is harder to achieve than backward compatibility, since, in the backward case, the input format is known whereas a forward compatible system needs to cope gracefully with unknown future features.
If, however, the benefit of forward compatibility is greater than the risk of it not working, it is typically better not to error out in this case and to give the operating system a chance even if the version cannot be detected.
The job of backward compatibility is often so difficult for operating systems that virtual machine emulation is often considered a solution for applications that have a dependency on prehistoric operating system versions.

However, backward compatibility is only half of the story when it comes to predicting the future of change in our applications.
The technical issues around forward compatibility get rather technical but they are not insurmountable[2].
There is no technical reason why developers cannot factor forward compatibility into their designs so that the Bobs and Bills of this world can continue to work together without keeping their application versions in lock-step.

Compatibility   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Backward compatibility is the ability to use the same code, including the latest SDK headers and source, with both current and older versions of LightWave.
Forward compatibility and compatibility across platforms are largely automatic for the plug-in author, as long as he or she writes to the specification in this documentation and uses the facilities provided by the SDK rather than platform-specific code.
Forward compatibility is therefore automatic, as long as LightWave continues to support version 4 of LWShaderHandler.

XML is one of the few markup languages that meets the vague definition of forwards compatibility in a manner that is truly independent of the implementation layer.
Forwards compatibility is something you can hope for, but you'll only find out when it's too late, and that could be as soon as then next browser revision.

 ONLamp.com -- Preserving Backward Compatibility
Backward compatibility is really a series of promises to your users as to what they can expect when they upgrade to a new version of your software.
Once you've thought about the level of compatibility you want to promise to your users, the next step is to think about the actual places your project needs to worry about specific kinds of compatibility problems.
This means that backward compatibility is preserved at the level of the binary object code produced when you compile the library.

Backward compatibility refers to the ability of a lead-free component to be mounted to a printed-circuit-board (PC-boards) using tin/lead (SnPb) solder reflow processing.
Forward compatibility refers to the ability of current SnPb lead finishes to be used with lead-free solder pastes during board mount assembly.
Backward compatibility to tin-lead processes is considered to be critical for this transition from tin-lead to lead-free processes.

 Backward/Forward Compatibility Issues with HDF5
This provides the best forward compatibility by allowing the maximum number of older versions of the library to read new files.
The second class of compatibility issues consists of situations where an application written to work with one version of the HDF5 Library fails to compile, link, or behave as would be expected with a different version of the library.
Note that compatibility flags are maintained only for the releases associated with the immediately following minor version number (see library version numbers above).

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the day that neither you or I talk about web standards; by then, everything is running as it should be.

The irony of writing lots of extra snippets of code to implement forward compatibility is that - in the end - it promotes the adoption of newer versions of Tcl/Tk and new features.

Bill is right, I think, in implying that our specific goal will be to define the use of schemas in such scenarios, but to design the schema mechanisms well, we will need to consider the overall needs and processing models of the applications.
Secondly, "assuming all nodes in the instance document not present in the later version of the schema are ignored" is defining a mechanism to achieve backward compatibility rather than a definition of it.

I decided to test what forward compatibility will work with the current Tech preview for a VS Whidbey component to be used in VS 2003. To test forward compatibility, I created a simple generic class with two static methods.  The first method returns a generic collection, the second returns a non-generic collection.
There may be occasions where Everett code could call Whidbey code without run-time errors but we're not explicitly designing for this type of compatibility (forward).
