The township contains fifty square miles of territory, and was erected into a township in 1855, of territory taken from the original Denison township.
In the extreme southeast corner of the township is the J. Neiss powder mill and a short distance east of it is the Pardee sawmill.

From the 1960s to early 1980s, the company incinerated lead-cased telephone cables or burned them in pits to melt off the lead and reclaim the remaining copper wire.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources (PA DER) began to investigate the site after detecting elevated lead levels in two nearby residential wells.
Further ground water sampling throughout the area confirmed the existence of a lead problem.

This gravel was removed, and additional measures have been taken to prevent any future gravel migration.
The 45-acre C and D Recycling site is located in Foster Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
Tests done by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) found high concentrations of lead and copper in the ash piles, soil, burn pit, and drainage pathway areas on the site.

The 1997 Eastern Region Abandoned Mine Land Award was presented to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation, Wilkes Barre District Office for it's design of the Upper Lehigh site located in Foster Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
The 64 acre site contained 12 abandoned strip pits, seven of which contained hazardous water bodies.
Other aspects of the project include the construction of water supply lines and storm water detention facilities.
