 Pattaya Mail Columns
It was ascertained by the company that EMD could indeed produce a suitable locomotive for the work, and through 1984 British Rail, Foster Yeoman and EMD were in long negotiations over the design.
Further discussions with British Rail top management led to the suggestion that Foster Yeoman should purchase their own fleet of diesel-electric locomotives, able to conform with company’s requirements for power and reliability.
It had to fit in with British height and width restrictions, the driver’s cab and controls were to conform with local practice, and in particular, special control of exhaust noise (which doesn’t seem to worry Americans) was to be very rigid indeed.

 Class 59
Foster Yeoman were impressed with the reliability of their privately owned and dedicated fleet of wagons so ventured to suggest to British Rail that their services be operated with a similarly privately owned and dedicated fleet of locomotives.
The seed of such a significant change was due to the discontent of Foster Yeoman, a major customer of British Rail for block trains for their stone and aggregate products, with the dismal reliability of locomotives provided for their services.
To meet British standards and fit within the restrictive loading gauge a considerable amount of re-design work and compromises were required to scale down the SD40-2 design.

 Class 66
class 59 introduced by Foster Yeoman the class 66 is a different locomotive for a different purpose.
The class 66 is used, subject to line clearance, system wide and whilst its main work is on most types of freight trains it is also used on a limited number of passenger services - principally charters - and also to rescue failed passenger locomotives.
The significant differences from the class 59 are the use of a GM type 710 prime mover (class 59 has type 645), a self steering bogie, revised side grille layout, smaller silencer, and the front headlight mounted centrally above the windscreen.

 Class 60
As a result of the considerable success of Foster Yeoman's imported GM class 59 locomotives Railfreight's Petroleum, Construction, Metal and Coal sub-sectors were clamouring for some of their own.
Thus following on from the Class 56 and Class 58 the Class 60 was British Rail's third and final attempt to produce an indigenous heavy freight diesel locomotive.
In a hugely different experience from the trouble-free entry of class 59s there was an average of 100 faults per loco and it took a staggering 16 months before first samples were officially accepted.
