8-Ball Rules   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-23)
The balls are racked in a triangle at the foot of the table with the 8-ball in the center of the triangle, the first ball of the rack on the foot spot, a stripe ball in one corner of the rack and a solid ball in the other corner.
Please Note: The incoming player has cue ball in hand behind the head string and may not shoot an object ball that is behind the head string, unless he first shoots the cue ball past the head string and causes the cue ball to come back behind the head string and hit the object ball.
An object ball is considered to be illegally pocketed when (1) that object ball is pocketed on the same shot a foul is committed, or (2) the called ball did not go in the designated pocket, or (3) a safety is called prior to the shot.

A foul ball goes sharply and directly from the bat to the catcher’s shin guard and rebounds to the third base person who catches the ball.

Foul ball - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Otherwise, when a batted ball becomes a foul ball, the ball is dead, all runners must return to their time-of-pitch base, and the batter continues to bat.
In different situations, a foul ball may be considered a positive or negative outcome of a pitch or swing.
Foul balls with two strikes are generally considered positive for the batter, since he thus avoids strike three on a potentially difficult pitch.

Fair and Foul Balls   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-23)
The judgment is based solely upon the relationship between the BALL and the LINE at the moment the fielder touches the ball, or at the moment the ball comes to a stop, or on outfield fly balls; the moment it touches the fielder or the ground.
An outfield fly ball is judged to be fair or foul by the relationship of the ball to the foul line at the moment it first touches the ground, or where it first touches a fielder.
A fair fly shall be judged according to the relative position of the ball and the foul line, including the foul pole, and not as to whether the fielder is on fair or foul territory at the time he touches the ball.

 Nine-Ball Rules
The object balls are racked in a diamond shape, with the 1-ball at the top of the diamond and on the foot spot, the 9-ball in the center of the diamond, and the other balls in random order, racked as tightly possible.
If the cue ball is pocketed or driven off the table, or the requirements of the opening break are not met, it is a foul, and the incoming player has cue ball in hand anywhere on the table.
If a match is not refereed, it will be considered a cue ball foul if during an attempt to jump, curve or masse the cue ball over or around an impeding numbered ball, the impeding ball moves (regardless of whether it was moved by a hand; cue stick follow-through or bridge).

A pitched ball that hits the batter is also considered a ball, although the batter must attempt to avoid being hit.
A strike shall be called if a pitched ball (i) goes through the target strike zone in the air, (ii) is swung at and missed by the batter, or (iii) is fouled by the batter.

A technical foul called for (1) delay of game, (2) coaches box violations, (3) defensive 3-seconds, or (4) having a team total of less or more than five players when the ball is alive, or (5) an offensive player hanging on his basket ring or backboard, is not considered an act of unsportsmanlike conduct.
Technical fouls assessed to opposing teams during the same dead ball and prior to the administering of any free throw attempt for the first technical foul, shall be interpreted as a double technical foul.
In the case where one punching foul is followed by another, all aspects of the rule are applied in both cases, and the team last offended is awarded possession on the sideline at the free throw line extended in the frontcourt.

 Change of Foul to Fair
The batter hunkers away from a high inside pitch, the ball whacks the bat, and the UIC erroneously calls: "Foul ball!" The ball each time rolled briskly to the pitcher, who picked it up and threw out the batter-runner.
Ruling: If the umpire agrees with the coach that the ball was fair, he may change his call because the "obvious" outcome of the hit would have been a "double." B1 is awarded second.
If the ball is subsequently ruled foul, simply order the batter back to the box &emdash; and any runners back to bases occupied at the time of the pitch.

On the fifth pitch, or subsequent pitch, the batter attempts to bunt the ball and the ball is batted foul.
In the event that the ball is thrown behind the runner, then the runner may proceed to the next base to avoid the tag; however, when all action ceases, then the runner is returned to the base the runner occupied at the time of the pitch, as base stealing is not allowed.
Any time there is a play on a runner and the ball is overthrown into foul or dead ball territory, the ball is dead, and the runner is awarded the base to which the runner was advancing.

Strike zone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
If any part of a pitched ball intersects any portion of this plane, the ball is in the strike zone and should be ruled as a strike (unless hit.) Technically, the strike zone has depth as well; the rules define a volume of 3-dimensional space–a right pentagonal prism.
Fails to swing at a pitched ball which is called a strike—determined to be in the strike zone—by the umpire.
A normal foul strike cannot count against the batter as his third strike; the third strike must be a swing and miss, called strike, touched ball, foul bunt or foul tip.

Dead Ball Foul is the story of Tricia, Luke, and Aaron: three teens who live in a quiet town in southwest Virginia, where the only excitement consists of the town's obsession with its high school football team.
Now Kayla is turning to mysteries with her first novel, Dead Ball Foul, scheduled to be published in September 2000 by the Overmountain Press.
DEAD BALL FOUL is clearly a young adult novel that will surprise other mystery readers with how good the plot is. Judsonville seems like a real place and the lead couple and support cast makes the small town feel even more genuine.

Bleed Cubbie Blue :: Book Review: "Foul Ball"
Jim Bouton's latest, "Foul Ball", also caught my eye, and having enjoyed "Ball Four" so much (and if you've never read it, what are you waiting for?), I thought I'd give it a shot.
After the 2000 season, that club left, was replaced for one year by the Pittsfield Astros, and then it appeared that Pittsfield, after more than a century of pro ball, would have no team in 2002 and after.
Ball Four was named one of the "Books of the Century" by the New York Public Library, specifically in the category of "Popular Culture and Mass Entertainment".

Foul Ball: My Life and Hard Times Trying to Save an Old Ballpark, Plus Part Two by Jim Bouton
This former Yankee pitcher, who wrote the sports tell-all template Ball Four, has a self-conscious voice that almost stifles this compelling story of Pittsfield, Mass., residents resisting a new stadium in order to renovate historic Wahconah Park instead.
If Jim Bouton's first book, "Ball Four" (which I admit to not having read yet, though it's way up on my to-read list now), was a masterpiece of baseball literature, "Foul Ball" is not only a masterpiece of muckraking journalism, it's also simply an engrossing story, very well told.
