  Isaac Asimov's Foundation Series
In 'Foundation', the early golden days of the Foundation are told, of how the society managed to gain survival and ultimately pre-eminence in it's local sector, not through violence, but through cunning.
Foundation's Edge is a fair book, but it doesn't contain any of the originality or strength of the original trilogy.
Prelude to Foundation is set before the first Foundation book, and features the exploits of Hari Seldon, as he is chased across the capital of the Galactic Empire, Trantor, by nasty individuals who want him for his theory of psychohistory.

 01-6347 -- Michael Foundation Inc. v. Urantia Foundation -- 03/11/2003
Urantia Foundation argues, as a preliminary matter, that the question of initial classification of works for copyright purposes is a question of law for the court and that the district court therefore erred when it submitted the question to the jury.
Urantia Foundation does not request reversal; rather, it incorporates its challenge to the jury instruction into its argument that initial classification is a matter of law for the court.
Michael Foundation insists that this question is logically solved by analogy to the settled distinction between joint and collective works--i.e., that it would be "perverse to allow two authors to decide for themselves whether their separate contributions were merged into a [unified] work.

Foundation is the story of one man's attempt to positively influence human history beyond the grave for centuries to come.
Foundation was certainly part of this era, defining two major ideas: that the entire galaxy would be populated by humans (no aliens around - an early look at the idea that we might just be unique), and that mass human behavior can be codified in mathematical algorithms and to a certain extent is predictable.
This book almost cannot be evaluated by itself, isolated from the rest of this set, because the full panorama and scale of the complete story far outweighs the individual contribution of each piece of it.

The scientists of the First Foundation had proved victorious; and now they return to Hari Seldon's long-established plan to build a new Empire that the Second Foundation is not destroyed after all-and that its still-defiant survivors are preparing their revenge.

 FOUNDATION AND EMPIRE Isaac Asim
Foundation And Empire, by Isaac Asimov is the second book in the original Foundation trilogy, which won a Hugo Award in 1965 for Best All-Time Series.
The first book is called The General, first published as the Dead Hand in the April, 1945 edition of Astounding Science Fiction, although it is prefaced by a prologue that recounts Foundation, much in the same manner as the movie serials that dominated in the 1940s, when these tales first saw daylight.
Yet, much of this book’s action occurs offstage, but this allows for some excellent psychological oneupsmanship between the players in the Foundation, the Empire’s minions, and the Independent Traders who jockey between the two powers, and see themselves as the real force in the Foundation, not the its bureaucratic and dynastic leaders.

You can weed out all the books with large-chested women who are falling out of their uniforms on the cover (unless it's written by Heinlein), but that can still leave you with entire rooms full of books to wade through.
Although there are now several Foundation novels, the original trilogy, Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation, was written thirty years before pressure from fans and his publisher forced Asimov to return to the series.
In the second story, the Foundation is menaced by a mutant, the Mule, something unforeseeable by the Seldon plan, which predicts that the Foundation will eventually rule over the entire galaxy.

Edward Gibbon's influence is certainly obvious in "Foundation." A galactic empire, centered in Trantor (a celestial Rome), is on the verge of collapse.
Each of the five episodes in the book reads like a tautly played game of political chess in which the winner is inevitably the visionary who is not wedded to traditional moves and who is patient enough to wait for his opponent to make the first mistake.
