Foundation and Earth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Foundation and Earth (1986) is a science fiction novel by Isaac Asimov, the fifth novel of the Foundation Series and chronologically the last in the series.
On the approach to Earth, they detect that it is highly radioactive, and not capable of supporting life.
The radioactive Earth theme was begun in Pebble in the Sky, which is set thousands of years earlier.

The Foundation Series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
George Lucas used elements of the Foundation series to construct the universe in which Star Wars is set, including propulsion by hyper-drive, lightsabers (evolved from force field penknives), and the Galactic Empire (although Lucas' Empire was by definition evil, while Seldon openly says that in principle the First Empire is not evil).
This speculation, however, fails to account for the fact that the term Al-Qaida, Arabic for "The Foundation", was first used by the United States to describe followers of Osama bin Laden and is not used by that group to refer to itself.

Forward the Foundation, on the other hand was probably the best of the new Foundation novels (as opposed to the original trilogy).
I'd say Foundation and Earth (and Foundation's Edge) sometimes seem a little less interesting because of the necessity Asimov felt to connect his Foundation universe with the Robot concept and that called for some plot twists and slower parts throughout those books
October 6th, 2004 07:26 PM I actually really loved Foundations' Edge but thought Foundation and Earth was mediocre at best, probably the worst of the series.

Members of the First Foundation establish contact with the telepathic robots of the planet Gaia and with their aid go on to search for humanity's long-lost ancestral planet, Earth.
In foundation's edge the ever mystic foundation and second foundation were reduced to triviality by newcomers on the planet Gaia who have had a superior grip on things all along.
For me this somewhat spoils the mystique of the first three books, however in "foundation and earth" this storyline is used quite effectively to strengthen the link with the robot series as the search for earth continues.

 Review of Foundation and Earth
Asimov had been inching the Foundation and robot books together ever since Prelude to Foundation, and here he makes the connection final, solid, explicit and in a way that really bothered me, by introducing R. Daneel Olivaw as an actual character in the Foundation series.
As with other late Foundation books, the plot is largely a travelogue (with an unusual amount of sex thrown in for Asimov).
And as with other late Foundation books, Asimov shows increased ability to portray different cultures—and yet, again as elsewhere, they are more interesting than the characters, which seems a weakness.

This is the last book (chronologically) in the Foundation Series, and with Prelude to Foundation, the earliest, the Foundation Series has two excellent bookends, or, perhaps, "foundations", to keep it in place.
F&E is a continuation of Foundation's Edge, and is the story of Trevize, Pelorat and Bliss/Gaia's quest to find Earth, in an attempt to determine why Trevize's choice for the future of mankind is the right one.
Whereas the rest of the Foundation Series tends to concentrate on worlds which, after a while, all appear similar, the worlds of F&E are different, frightening, and yet serve Asimov's agendas well.

As a resolution to the series it's not bad, but the bulk of the book is little more than an uninteresting travelogue with exactly the same structure as Foundation's Edge and even less substance.
Still, it's probably best not to speak ill of the dead, and Asimov did a pretty creditable job of tying together the robot novels and the Foundation novels (at least until his disappointing last novel, Prelude to Foundation).
