Class Definition for Class 450 - FOUNDATION GARMENTS
These are commonly known as "foundation garments" and in common parlance the parts thereof are termed "brassiere" and "corset" or "girdle" for the upper and lower parts, respectively.
Included in the subclass are foundation garments in which the brassiere portion is readily removable from the corset portion so as to facilitate laundering or for interchanging the brassiere or corset with another supporter or an apparel-type garment.
A waist-encircling band or belt is not considered to be a "garment" for the purpose of this and the indented subclasses.

From his experience, the author knows that it is impossible to cut a fitting garment by reducing the waist to a close measure at the sideseams only, and the little extra work entailed by cutting up the outline pattern and closing out the waist suppression is amply repaid in the finished garment.
It is advisable, when designing bias-cut garments, to keep all the design seams at an angle of forty-five degrees from the vertical, so that, when the pattern outline is placed on the bias of the material, these design seams will all be on the "straight" and twisting of the various sections will be minimized.

Brassiere - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A brassière or bra is a foundation garment for women which covers and supports the breasts.
However, this anatomical support is usually insufficient to hold the breasts up (especially in older women), and to prevent movement of the breasts, which can cause pain and discomfort.
The primary reason for wearing a brassiere or similar foundation garment is thus to provide external support for the breasts, both to increase comfort and to provide a sexually alluring figure.

The ordinary foundation garment is designed to fit primarily the body's measurements, but the difference between our customer's figure as it really is and the figure she hopes to achieve, is not just a question of measurements.
This gives rise to difficulty in fitting the individual figure in the ordinary foundation garment, designed only for the figure with an average hip development, because it must be chosen to a size large enough to fit the most developed part of the figure, and altered, often quite extensively, where the figure is smaller.
