The Foundation Series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
For example, the Foundation slides gradually into oligarchy and dictatorship prior to the appearance of the Mule, but, for the most part, the book treats that change as being necessary in Hari Seldon's plan, rather than mulling over whether it is on the whole positive or negative.
George Lucas used elements of the Foundation series to construct the universe in which Star Wars is set, including propulsion by hyper-drive, lightsabers (evolved from force field penknives), and the Galactic Empire (although Lucas' Empire was by definition evil, while Seldon openly says that in principle the First Empire is not evil).
This speculation, however, fails to account for the fact that the term Al-Qaida, Arabic for "The Foundation", was first used by the United States to describe followers of Osama bin Laden and is not used by that group to refer to itself.

 Isaac Asimov's Foundation Series
In 'Foundation', the early golden days of the Foundation are told, of how the society managed to gain survival and ultimately pre-eminence in it's local sector, not through violence, but through cunning.
Foundation's Edge is a fair book, but it doesn't contain any of the originality or strength of the original trilogy.
Prelude to Foundation is set before the first Foundation book, and features the exploits of Hari Seldon, as he is chased across the capital of the Galactic Empire, Trantor, by nasty individuals who want him for his theory of psychohistory.

Asimov's trilogy, consisting of Foundation (1951), Foundation and Empire (1952), and Second Foundation (1953), is a famous classic for several reasons.
Seldon and his followers start the Foundation, a brotherhood whose aim it is to preserve the theory as well as ensure that man's technological knowledge is not forgotten during the inescapable dark interrim.
The main crisis for the Foundation is the appearence of a freak of nature, a man with hitherto unseen psychokinetic powers.

Bookslut - 100 Books Project - The Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov
Although there are now several Foundation novels, the original trilogy, Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation, was written thirty years before pressure from fans and his publisher forced Asimov to return to the series.
This may be the least satisfying out of all the Foundation stories, as its resolution depends not at all on the genius or cunning of any one person.
In the second story, the Foundation is menaced by a mutant, the Mule, something unforeseeable by the Seldon plan, which predicts that the Foundation will eventually rule over the entire galaxy.

The Templeton Gate - Authors - Asimov's Foundation Trilogy
Even though I still enjoy the earlier segments of the trilogy, I think his improvement is quite noticeable in the second section of the second book, known individually as "The Mule," which was awarded a Retro-Hugo in 1996.
The purpose of the foundation would be to maintain the vast store of knowledge compiled by humanity, and to produce an Encyclopedia Galactica, which would be made available to all of the libraries in the galaxy.
He also tells them that the initial goal of the Foundation, that of compiling the Encyclopedia, was a fraud perpetrated for the sole purpose of establishing the colony on Terminus, far away from the populated Galactic center.

 Foundation
Each chapter is a new era in the Foundation's history, and as people come and go, its logical imperative proceeds virtually unhindered; that is, until it is destroyed in the second novel, only for the Second Foundation to triumph in the third.
Foundation is the first of the trilogy; it is set far in the future.
The book describes a hunt for the Second Foundation where the hunters may or may not have been controlled by the hunted, the hunted may or may not have been found by the hunters, and what seems to be independent thought and action on any of their parts may not be so.

Foundation marks the first of a series of tales set so far in the future that Earth is all but forgotten by humans who live throughout the galaxy.
The first Foundation trilogy (Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation) won a Hugo Award in 1965 for "Best All-Time Series." It's science fiction on the grand scale; one of the classics of the field.
The Foundation novel is very dated, which I suppose is a function of the time it was written.

This is an interesting and useful addition to the Foundation sage it does not have the pace and "keep reading" quality that marks the original Foundation series by Asimov himself.
This is the first in a posthumous trilogy sanctioned - if not instigated - by the Asimov Estate and actually a prequel to Isaac Asimov's 'classic' Foundation trilogy, one of the landmark SF works of the mid-twentieth century.
This detracted from, rather than added to, the Foundation trilogy, and were additional complications with which these three authors had to contend.

In Foundation, Isaac Asimov draws a compelling portrait of the Foundation's embryonic development and rise the peripheral power -- domination of kingdoms on the outskirts of the Galaxy.
Foundation and Empire tells the story of the period of disruption, after the Foundation has attained peripheral power -- of struggles between petty kingdoms and the Foundation's emergence as a state strong enough finally to defeat the decrepit First Empire.

What I recall is that there were two foundations set up at the opposite end of the galaxy and the first foundation was the "public" foundation and the second was secret and it's business was to actually see that "the plan" stayed on course.

Since the Foundation's ultimate success was guaranteed by psychohistory, there was a considerable lack of dramatic tension, and it was hard keeping the stories from contradicting each other.
