 JTR: Commodities - Foundry Sand
Foundry sand primarily consists of clean, uniformly sized, high-quality silica sand or lake sand that is bonded to form molds for ferrous and nonferrous metal castings.
Large foundries are typically the only generators capable of producing the amount of foundry sand necessary for these applications.
Foundry sand from smaller generators can be used in other applications, such as the production of bricks, blocks, Portland cement, agricultural soil amendments, and other innovative products usually related to local markets.

Foundry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A foundry is a factory which produces castings of metal, both ferrous and non-ferrous.
In foundries, molten metal is poured into molds.
For example an iron foundry (for cast iron) will use a cupola, similar to a small blast furnace, while a steel, bronze, brass or aluminum foundry will normally use an electrical induction furnace or in some cases a gas heated crucible furnace.

 Reference.com/Encyclopedia/Foundry
The term foundry originally was a synonym for a steel mill or general metal works where metal casting operations were performed.
The foundry model was a business vision, built on the separation of two key activities of (integrated circuit) IC-development: the electronic design process, and the manufacturing (fabrication) of physical devices.
Foundries rarely released detailed design-kits (which were considered industry secrets) in advance, and when they did, often subjected the customer to secret, proprietary, and non-portable conversion/preparation steps.

 What is the Foundry
The Foundry is a model of real economic life that tests the ideas, the teams, the technology, the revenue models and the culture against actual business scenarios to see whether they have the right to succeed in the outside world.
As a result of this process, the Foundry delivers not just jobs but sustainable practices that have already been validated, thus providing tremendous motivation and rewards to candidates who are able to drive the industry with innovative success and take their careers into their own hands.
Foundry, which is known to be an uncommonly collaborative and supportive, practice leadership school is a seriously competitive environment and you have to be ready for anything.

 Foundry Sand - Material Description
Foundry sand consists primarily of clean, uniformly sized, high-quality silica sand or lake sand that is bonded to form molds for ferrous (iron and steel) and nonferrous (copper, aluminum, brass) metal castings.
Since only small quantities of spent foundry sand are generated at small foundries, it will generally be necessary for these operators to transport their spent sand to a central storage area that receives sand from a group of plants before transferring it to an end user.
Foundry sand sources and stockpiles must be monitored to assess the need to establish controls for potential phenol discharges.

 Health and Safety in Foundries
Foundry processes can be divided into two types:- ferrous foundries and non-ferrous foundries (the latter usually work at a lower temperature).
For example lead in gun metal, and other alloys, can contribute substantially to the foundry working environment in a very harmful way, especially if methods of control at source including local ventilation are not adequate.
Foundries are also very prone to hazards from noise which can result in industrial deafness and from vibration (in the fettling process) which can lead to hand arm vibration syndrome.
