The complex dominantly andesitic Soufrière Hills volcano occupies the southern half of the island of Montserrat.
Long-term small-to-moderate ash eruptions beginning in that year were later accompanied by lava-dome growth and pyroclastic flows that forced evacuation of the southern half of the island and ultimately destroyed the capital city of Plymouth, causing major social and economic disruption.
Slight ashfall was reported to the SW in Puela on 24 May, and the observatory reported a decrease in gas and ash emissions.

This report on the risk assessment is a companion to that which describes the scientific assessment of the eruption and hazardous phenomena (Assessment of the Status of the Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat and its Hazards, 18 December 1997).
The Soufriere Hills volcano has continued to erupt for two and a half years and the MVO scientists are learning some of the empirical rules that govern its behaviour.
For the next few months ashfalls in Cork Hill and the Salem area including Frith and Old Towne were intermittent, but they built up again as the dome building and pyroclastic flow activity increased until the largest event so far occurred on 25 June 1997, when a moderate ashfall occurred in the same communities.

Queen Christina of Sweden, seeing the fountain and thinking that it ran in her honor, modestly asked that it be switched off: "Ma'am," came the answer, "these waters run both day and night." The fountain water comes from within a building; the Palazzo Poli, owned and operated in its time by the Dukes of Poli.
The story of how a fountain came to be built that eclipsed the building whose glory it was meant to be is one of jurisdiction.
Indeed (and this is what the fountain's architect, Nicolo Salvi, did), they could cover up the Conti façade entirely; they could block entirely the ducal family's view of the piazza, obscuring it (as Salvi did) with a high new sculpted marble wall.

The magma comprises a mixture of 60 to 70% crystals and a silica-rich liquid at a temperature of around 830°C. The eruption is thought to have been prompted by the heating of the rocks in the source at about 5 km depth through addition of much hotter magma from deeper in the earth.
However, many in the scientific group were of the opinion that the Soufriere Hills volcano is a relatively small volcanic system with magma freely flowing to the surface and with petrological features atypical of the magma bodies that produce large plinian eruptions and typical of volcanoes which produce dome eruptions.
The large amount of data gathered by a modern observatory means that the detailed analysis and research work lags behind the basic data collection and immediate interpretation for assessing the status of the volcano.

We also calculate the pressure of the blast as a function of distance from the dome.By combining this with the theory of shock waves interacting with obstacles we are then able to calculate the force on buildings in the path of the flow.
These eruptions were characterized by an early phase of axisymmetric ballistic throw-out, followed by fountain collapse that sent pumiceous pyroclastic flows radially from the crater to distances of several kilometers, and by rise of convective columns with altitudes from 9 to 14 km.
Previously determined estimates of conduit diameter and magma temperature were used in conjunction with ballistic ranges and angles, pumice vesicularity, and estimated DRE volumes to calculate the length, pressure profile, and solid/gas volume fraction profile within the conduit prior to the explosions.

SCIENTIFIC AND HAZARDS ASSESSMENT OF SOUFRIERE HILLS VOLCANO DECEMBER 1999
The scientific group notes that the absence of an observatory with direct views of the volcano reduces the ability of the MVO to monitor the eruption as efficiently and effectively as possible.
The group recommends the building of the new observatory with the utmost urgency, and recommends immediate steps be taken to strengthen existing capabilities for direct visual monitoring in the meantime.
St Georges Hill could also become vulnerable to surge clouds, and to fall of coarse pumice fragments (10 to 15 cm diameter) capable of causing serious injuries, if explosions comparable to those experienced in 1997 were to resume.

IAU members decided that Pluto should be designated a dwarf planet, a decision that didn't go over well in many places, including the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.
A Griffith official later told me that the observatory would ignore the IAU vote and continue to refer to Pluto as a planet.

The Art Deco-gem that is Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles will reopen in early November, more than a year after a $93 million renovation and expansion was supposed to be complete.
The precise date of the reopening will be announced on Oct. 3 during a news conference at the observatory, whose exhibit space has increased by about 20,000 square feet since the facility closed for repairs in January 2002.
But Griffith officials have done a poor job on its moon exhibit, which is surprising considering that the United States, China and Japan say they will send manned and unmanned spacecraft to our only natural satellite in the years ahead.
