Fountain Square has been the symbolic center of Cincinnati since it was first completed in 1871, at approximately its present site.
In 1971 the Square was redesigned by the firm of RTKL, Baltimore, Md. The Fountain was slightly moved and re-oriented to the west, and the scale of the plaza was enlarged to reflect that of new buildings around it.
Fountain Square is intensively used for lunch-break gatherings and is the site of daily and nightly civic activities, enhanced by a recent performance shell (BHDP, 1985; see 15).

 Fountain Square - Narrative History
The history of Fountain Square is traditionally said to begin with Calvin Fletcher and Nicholas McCarthy's purchase of the 264-acre farm of Dr. John H. Sanders in December 1835.
Fountain Square's growing population was reflected as well in the opening of School No. 18 (Abraham Lincoln) on East Palmer Street in 1901, followed by the construction of additions in 1906 and 1915.
Among the hardest-hit neighborhoods in Indianapolis was Fountain Square, which lost over 6,000 residents during the 1960s (this number represented almost 25 percent of the total population of the area) and most of its housing stock built between 1870 and 1910.

Cast at the Royal Bavarian Foundry in Munich, the elaborate bronze fountain was donated to the city in 1871 by Henry Probasco.
The fountain was moved 30 feet in the 1960s and turned 180 degrees to face west.

This 43-foot fountain is the oldest downtown sculpture and has become the best known and loved symbol of Cincinnati.
Water streams from the out-stretched hands of the 9-foot tall female figure representing the "Genius of Water." Below her, four adult figures dramatize the life-sustaining uses of water, four children illustrate the life-enhancing pleasures of water, and four relief panels depict the industrial uses of water.
In 1971, for its 100th anniversary, the fountain was repaired and re-dedicated.

Since 1871 Cincinnatians have viewed the Tyler Davidson Fountain, in its present location at Fountain Square and in its previous incarnation a block away at Government Square, as a symbol of Cincinnati.
Along with the artistic presence and casting skills of Ferdinand von Miller and his two sons, Ferdinand and Fritz, the fountain was cast in 24 tons of canon bronze purchased from the Danish government.

In April the new fountain and four statues representing the four seasons were placed in the park, and on April 23 the water was turned on.
The old fountain was disassembled and portions sold at auction, and the new one was installed in May 1881.
The statues surrounding the fountain represent the mythological figures of Ceres (goddess of grain), Pomona (goddess of fruit), Melpomane (goddess of tragedy) and Flora (goddess of flowers.) The Fiske Company of New York cast the four statues as well as the two urns at the east and west ends of the park.

In order to make Fountain Square lively and appealing, the square itself should be so welcoming and lovely that people long for somewhere to sit and "enjoy the view." Surrounding the square should be open-air cafes, wine bars and coffee shops where people can do just that.
Fountain Square could be improved by making access from the south and west sides easier, removing some of the walls that block off pedestrians.
The square is "caged in," and to eliminate buses and traffic from that side would make a tremendous difference.
