  A Few Notes about Fountain Pens   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
A fountain pen trains you to write with light pressure and is much less tiring than a ballpoint, rollerball, or pencil.
An italic pen is one whose point is not a ball, but rather is cut straight across so that the width of the line depends on the direction in which it is moving.
Fountain pen inks consist of water, one or more soluble dyes, and a small amount of a wetting agent (detergent) both to clean the pen and to help the ink adhere to paper that may be slightly oily.

 penspotters :: fountain pen inks
Advertising propaganda notwithstanding, the fountain pen inks sold today are fundamentally the same (chemically speaking) as those sold 75 or more years ago; in fact, the trade names Quink (Parker) and Skrip (Sheaffer) of the two most popular inks on the market, if not the actual ink formulations themselves, date back to before the 1920s.
Some makers may "calibrate" the feeds of their pens to work with a certain viscosity of ink (that happens to match the ink they sell), but this is a rather rough calibration that could probably be met as well or even better by other brands of ink.
Fountain pen ink is pretty stable, chemically speaking: there should be no natural process that destroys the ink over time so long as it is kept clean and tightly capped.

The pen is one of the most useful objects ever invented, it's the corner stone of history, as it began with the invention of writing.
The idea behind the fountain pen is pretty simple; to hold the ink inside the pen instead of dipping the quill in ink.
The rest is history with numerous inventions; from John Parker's piston refillable pen in 1832 to the Lewis Waterman pen of 1884 that was recognized as the first safe pen.

Fountain pen nibs are made in a bewildering array of sizes and styles.
When you write with an italic, you hold the pen with the nib generally away from your forearm (as with a stub or a round nib).
The many people who bought these pens and the thousands who collect them today outnumber the few who disparage firm nibs as “nails.” In fact, for the majority of users, “nails” are actually better than flexible nibs, and this was as true 80 years ago as it is today.
