The village was the nearest railway point to the post, only 40 miles from the nearest corner before the boundaries of the reservations were shifted.
In the city in the early years there was a hotel, with a bar and pool room, four big stores, a mortician, two banks, two drug stores and a theater, a post office was added in December of 1900.
In 1905 a four-room brick school was built and in 1910 four more rooms were added to the upper story.

The Fort Berthold Indian Reservation is a U.S. Indian reservation in North Dakota that is home for the Three Affiliated Tribes which consists of the Mandan, Arikara and Hidatsa peoples.
The current incarnation was created in 1870 by the U.S. government and is located on the Missouri River in McKenzie, Mountrail, Ward, McLean, Mercer and Dunn counties.
The current reservation now hosts a casino built in 1993 in New Town as well as the new Four Bears Bridge which has just opened in 2005.
