"Four by the Beatles" is the rarest of the commercially released EPs, released by Capitol Records on 5/11/64.
"4 by 4" or "4 by the Beatles" was the third and final commercially released U.S. Beatles EP and hard cover sleeve by Capitol Records on 2/11/65.

As far as the Beatles releases in the USA are concerned, nearly all of the Beatles' EP and Compact 33 releases are scarce, with the only exception being the popular Vee Jay EP.
In England, the Beatles used 1964 to issue an EP of brand new songs (as opposed to the usual practice of pulling singles or album tracks together).
In America, though, EP releases were sparse, with no EP's or Compact 33's being issued after 1965.

The Beatles at that time had yet to record 'Love Me Do', which was their first real British hit, and the decision to pass them up was made on the strength of several German recordings with Tony Sheridan, and a few items like 'Ain't She Sweet' and 'My Bonnie'.
Either because of Trans-Global's actions, or the Beatle's lack of success, the next single, 'She Loves You' / 'I'll Get You' (Swan 4152), was sent to the even smaller Swan label, which was founded in the late 1950's in Philadelphia, where it was issued on 16 September 1963, just after the UK single.
Initially, the EP was issued in a cardboard sleeve at the unusually high price of $1.29 on 23 March 1964.

In the Beatles' later music, the pace of the songs tends to be moderate, with more of the interest usually (but not always) coming from the melody and the orchestration than the rhythm.
Additionally, even though the first four Beatles albums were originally released as both monaural and stereo recordings in the United Kingdom, stereo phonographs were quite rare in England at the time.
When it came time to release the Beatles catalog on CD, the decision was made to use the original British versions of the albums, since those were the "way the Beatles originally intended them to be." The initial release of the first four CDs were of the original mono mixes.

Polydor had not yet reached EP number 21 610 in June 1963, confirmed by the numerical listings in the annual publication "Der Grosse deutsche Schallplatten Katalog 1964", compiled in June 1963, but they were close to it, confirming July 1963 as the original issue date for 21 610.
This EP is of course the mono mix of the original vocal.
The sleeve, advertising the Beatles prominently on the B side, and the disk are pictured on Robert York's web page.

The album starts off with the Beatles latest single, "I Want to Hold Your Hand," followed by its US b-side, "I Saw Her Standing There," and its UK b-side, "This Boy." Since mono mixes of the UK single had been sent to Capitol, there are two songs on this album which appear in "rechanneled" stereo.
Two of the Long Tall Sally EP songs, the 3 single sides, and the remainder of the With the Beatles album were collected into this l.p., which makes somewhat of a nice mix.
This record was the first Beatles album release on their new label, Apple, and the record labels indicated that the album was manufactured by Capitol but issued by Apple.

Just as "Beatles For Sale," was the summit of what was known as the British "beat," and "Sgt. Pepper" to come later was their full production extravaganza, and "Revolver," their post-acid period, this album truly marked the beginning of The Beatles giant step into the future.
What gave The Beatles the freedom to make this wonderful recording was they were supposed to begin making their third film, but no-one agreed on a script, thus The Beatles had a three-month break to do whatever they wanted.

The EP box set was the most recent collection issued by EMI, in the early 90s, and has the most up-to-date remastering.
EP's or extended-plays were quite popular in Britain and in Europe, and some even made the singles charts, even though they had more than 2 songs on them and were more expensive than singles.
The real gem here is the packaging, which faithfully reproduces all of the Beatles EP artwork and culminates in the full reproduction of the Magical Mystery Tour double 45 booklet.

However, the Beatles' reputation as Mellotron users relies almost solely on 'Strawberry Fields'; they only (obviously) used one on three more tracks in their oeuvre, and those are usually only referred to by aficionados.
Apparently the Beatles' first use of the 'Tron was on the mini-collage section of 'Tomorrow Never Knows', their first true piece of psychedelia, from 1966's Revolver, but it's difficult to tell in amongst the sonic maelstrom of the track.
Assuming the 'all four members' story is true, Ringo never recorded his or anyone else's, which makes you wonder where his machine went.

It is the first Beatles album conceived as an album, not just a bunch of songs (their first released identically in the US and the UK), and the first rock album where the songs blend into each other with no breaks.
Only six Beatles tracks, two of them are recycled from earlier records (title track; "All You Need Is Love"), and the entire second side consists of assorted George Martin elevator music instead of the pile of additional tunes that appear in the film.

In 1995, with the imminent release of the Beatles Anthology sets, I felt it would be a good idea to finally write down all the ideas that had been brewing in my head for ten years about how to properly present the Beatles’ catalog on CD.
Frankly, knowing how the Beatles’ organization works (or doesn’t work), I was surprised when I received a letter from Apple, signed by Neil Aspinall (or Neil’s secretary) stating that it was not a course of action they felt was appropriate at the time.
The "montage poster" as well as the four portraits of the individual Beatles that were included in the original LP would be reproduced exactly, from the original materials on the same heavy stock paper on which they were initially printed.

That decision annoyed many Beatles fans at the time, while others were pleased to hear the mono mixes that had been out-of-print for a while.
Later on, that decision in favor of mono-only was reversed to some extent, for releases after the first four albums have often contained early tracks in stereo.
This list also includes EP and single tracks, and "She Loves You" is also not known to exist in true stereo.

Epstein got The Beatles auditions at a number of record labels, all of them declining the group, until they played for producer George Martin of Parlophone/EMI and were signed in May 1962.
