Plates of Nephi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nephi's father, Lehi, was also a prophet who, prophesied of the destruction of Jerusalem, left Jerusalem with a few others around 600 BC and were eventually directed to the New World.
Both Nephi (1 Nephi 19:3) and Mormon (Words of Mormon 1:7) recorded that the small plates were made for a "wise purpose" that was known to the Lord.
The large plates of Nephi were continually maintained until about AD 385, when the prophet Mormon, seeing that the destruction of the Nephite nation was imminent, abridged the large plates of Nephi.

The Words of Mormon, written in AD 385 by Mormon, is a short introduction to the books of Mosiah, Alma, Helaman, 3 Nephi, and 4 Nephi, all of which he abridged from a large quantity of existing records that detailed his nation's history from the time of Omni to his own life.
An angel prophesied to Nephi that Jesus's birth would be 600 years from the time he and his family left Jerusalem (1 Nephi 10:4, 19:8; See 3 Nephi 1).
Many prophets in the Book of Mormon, beginning with Lehi and Nephi, saw in visions the birth, ministry, and death of Christ in visions (1 Nephi 11), and were told his name.

Nephi is reminded of the original twelve from the vision, and shown the twelve in the New World.
Nephi sees the termination of his seed, and notes that the cause is their pride and the temptations of the devil.
Nephi also sees that the seed of his brethren will continue and be capable of being defined as "multitudes." It is interesting that this is still not placed "on the map." It is entirely unclear is Nephi knows where these multitudes will be.

Nephi here states that he saw three generations and many of the fourth pass away in righteousness, and then his posterity was overpowered because of pride and iniquity.

Nephi says, "and there are also secret combinations, even as in times of old, according to the combinations of the devil, for he is the founder of all these things; yea, the founder of murder, and works of darkness" (2 Nephi 26:22).

The first section of 4 Nephi briefly summarizes four generations of peace, righteousness, and equality that resulted from the conversion of the people to the gospel of Jesus Christ after the visit of the resurrected Savior.
Fourth Nephi narrates an unparalleled epoch in human society when all the people followed the teachings of Christ for nearly two centuries.

Third Nephi was written by Nephi, the son of Nephi, the son of Helaman.
The chapters in 3 Nephi 8-26 inclusive deal altogether with the events of about six days?the three days of darkness and destruction on this continent and the three-day ministry of the resurrected Christ among the Nephites.
Third Nephi is by all means the most important book in the Nephite record because of the ministry and witness of the resurrected Christ on this continent.

All mankind must be born again, for the natural man is an enemy to God until he yields to the holy spirit and is born of Christ, being changed to a state of righteousness, becoming his son or daughter (Mosiah 3:19; Mosiah 27:25; Alma 22:15-18; Moroni 10:34).

FAIR Message Boards   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Nephi, the prophet whom God chooses to serve as “a ruler and a teacher” over his brethren, appears in the beginning of the Book of Mormon as the fourth son of Lehi (1Nephi 2:5,22).
In addition to the issue of the supremacy of the fourth son, Zakovitch demonstrates that the three-four sequence regularly appears in literary patterns including God’s initial revelation to Samuel (1 Samuel 3:4-11) and the theophany witnessed by Balaam and his donkey (Numbers 22: 21-35).
Nephi’s apparent emphasis proposes the unanswerable question of whether the well-known three-four sequence actually contributed to Laman and Lemuel’s fear that resulted in their temporary change of heart.

This is a transitional shift between an inserted discourse by Lehi, and the beginning of Nephi’s personal narrative of the history of the separation of the family.

We have the first occurrence of this phrase in the 1 Nephi 10:1 after Nephi took a break in his narrative to explain the plates in our chapter 9, and then returns to his original theme.

He was in Fourth Nephi and, as a master's student in econometrics is probably invariably wont to be, had some major concerns about the communist rhetoric (so it seemed to him) found in that part of the Book of Mormon.
Specifically, he inferred from the verse that now serves as the lead in quote at LDSLF that the Book of Mormon was advocating central planned economies such as those that had tyrannized Eastern Europe for the last forty to fifty years (closer to seventy in Russia).
I had taken Economics 110 at BYU before my mission and was happy to at least be able to engage him in a discussion using a few terms of art and concepts, at the most basic level, that he surely hadn't thought that we would know about.
