So How Do I Ride a Fox Trottter?
The rhythm of the fox trot should be an uneven four beats, 1-2--3-4, or "Ta-dum, Ta-dum." The rider will feel the broken rhythm from the saddle and the rise and fall of the hindquarters with a very gentle rocking forward and back, but there should be no rough jolt as the feet strike the ground.
This isn't such a concern with a Fox Trotter as many other soft-gaited breeds, as the fox trot is a form of broken trot, not broken pace.

The Fox Trot and the Show Gait   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Key to defining a true fox trot and what is referred to as a "show gait" is the foot fall sequence and timing of the 2 gaits.
The current "show gait" (not a fox trot), which has some other names, is closer in timing to the two beat trot, and is actually a variation of the hard trot which is considered very bad form in trotting horses (but common) called a heavy on the forehand trot.
Not only is this gait uncomfortable to ride, it is hard on the horse -- any gait which weights the forehand of the horse is hard on him, especially when he is carrying a rider and saddle.
