  Foxfire
FOXFIRE, which is about five teenage girls taking a walk on the wild side, has its share of incisive, intelligent moments, but the film as a whole is undermined by a silly plot and the bland characterization of secondary players.
FOXFIRE, which is based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oats, has undergone significant modernization to change the setting from the '50s to the '90s, but the theme of female empowerment is still at the forefront.
The movie opens in a Portland, Oregon high school, where a nasty biology teacher (John Diehl) is tormenting a young female student, Rita (Jenny Lewis), because she won't dissect her frog.

Foxfire   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
"Foxfire," directed by Annette Haywood-Carter, from a screenplay by Elizabeth White, updates Joyce Carol Oates's novel from the 1950s and upgrades its characters from bleak working class to comfortably suburban.
The movie zigzags nervously between telling the chaste love story of Maddy and Legs (whose eyes well up whenever Maddy's around) and recounting the gang's adventures, which escalate from breaking and entering to car hijacking to kidnapping.
Rating: "Foxfire" is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian).

 Chicago Reader Movie Review
True, some of the conceits are goofy, though the movie luxuriates in hyperbole: electrocution is offered to criminals as an alternative to being banished to LA, now separated from the Pacific coast; and Snake is forced to play a one-man basketball game to save his skin and leads an aerial attack with old-fashioned flying machines.
In one nocturnal interior shot, Legs is lit by a blue light while the other girls drift around her like moths; in another indelible interlocking configuration, the five heroines gather around a sink in the school bathroom; and Maddy's dark bedroom twinkles with as many mysterious pinpoints of light as a planetarium.
I haven't said much about Foxfire's plot, portions of which are fairly sluggish, but I'm not convinced that the story matters nearly as much as the distilled visual and behavioral poetry that derives from it, none of which is hinted at in the blurbs quoted above.

The movie Foxfire, which came out in 1996, was based on the Foxfire novel.
The movie, although not nearly as good as the book, does have its strong points, the most important of which is its portrayal of the bond formed between the girls.
While the movie is a poor representation of the book, on its own, it's a good movie.

Foxfire is a great idea for a movie that, somewhere, went wrong.
The parallel between the growing power and self-assurance of the girls and their increasing outcast status is exceptionally well-handled, and that power and self-assurance is depicted with just the right amount of discomfort on both the parts of the girls and the parts of the viewers.
As should be expected in any movie based on a novel by the redoubtable Joyce Carol Oates, there is a great deal of subtext to be had, and it all works quite nicely.

Rappaport's intricate, multifaceted fictional essay about a real actress perceived through the fictions of her movies and the ambiguous facts of her life, told mainly through clips and recitations by Mary Beth Hurt, explores the delicate transactions between ethics and aesthetics without ever letting us feel assured that we know which is which.
Good quiet movies about character tend to be as underappreciated and neglected as movies displaying ethical wisdom (see number 13).

Angelina Jolie has become more widely known lately for her performances in films like "Girl, Interrupted" as well as her "wild girl" image, but it was a pair of fine performances in "Foxfire" and "Hackers" that introduced us to the actress about 4 years ago.
Although "Foxfire" does stumble towards the end, it's Jolie's performance as a drifter who becomes the new girl in town that really carries the picture.
SOUND: The sound for "Foxfire" is pretty limited; the film is mainly dialogue-driven with occasional rock music.

i liked this movie from the beginning and i thought it was filled with surprising twists, but the ending was a little weird and kinda' boring.
The reason I gave it four stars and not five were because I could hardly hear the actors when they were talking in the movie.
I got the urge to see it after renting the "Girl,Interrupted" DVD and falling in love with Angelina Jolie and then seeing the preview for this on the DVD.The movie in fact is pretty damn good. It's sad and funny and Angelina Jolie is incredible.

Based on the best-selling novel by Joyce Carol Oates, "Foxfire" is the story of four young women drawn together when a young, James Dean-like female drifter comes walking into town one day.
As a member of a talented ensemble, she doesn't have to carry the movie.
The storyline is nicely handled for the most part -- watch for that initial movie talker -- he'll continue to show up throughout the film in very surprising but totally believable ways.

Jolie's first foray into film was of a sci-fi nature, with a supporting role in 1993's Cyborg 2, which didn't even make it to the big screen, and a lead role in Hackers (1995), where she met future husband and British actor Jonny Lee Miller of Trainspotting fame.
Jolie and Miller's morbid wedding reception in 1995, where Jolie wore fl and had Jonny's name written across the back of her shirt in blood, could have foreshadowed that their marriage would not last too long -- they were separated within the year and filed for divorce in 1999.
She was honored with a 1997 Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe Award and an Emmy nomination for her role as Cornelia Wallace in the TV movie George Wallace, co-starring Gary Sinise.

My biggest gripe is the fact that the creators of this little sister soulbonding fest decided that it was their duty to hire the most inept crew of actresses I have ever seen in my entire life.
My favorite is Goldie, the stubbleheaded Asian (that multi-racial audience bit again..see review for The Craft) dope fiend whose soul purpose in the film is to stare at the camera with a glazed look in her eyes.
Point being, after Foxfire, I never felt less ready to go out and bond with my fellow females.
