The series of six Foxfire Books published in the early 1970s were an effort to document the lifestyle, culture, and skills of people in the Appalacian Mountains.
The books were editied by Eliot Wigginton, a high school teacher, based on articles his students had written that were previously published in magazine form.
The town of Foxfire, NC was incorporated some years after the publication of the books.

 The Foxfire Museum and Heritage Center ~ Mountain City, Georgia
The Foxfire chapel is a replica structure built mostly from an old barn that was too deteriorated to reassemble.
(Aunt Arie told Foxfire that all of her and her husband, Ulyss’s, furniture was made by a local furniture maker and was paid for with produce.) The uniqueness of this chair is that no glue, nails, or tacks are used.
Foxfire asks that you visit the Foxfire Museum and Heritage Center to join them in celebration of the past and to support their educational programs.

This is the original book compilation of Foxfire material which introduces Aunt Arie and her contemporaries and includes log cabin building, hog dressing, snake lore, mountain crafts and food, and "other affairs of plain living."
The people who contributed their knowledge & wisdom to these books are a resource that has largely been lost to us, and it's a shame that more of us don't realize the wisdom that is missing in this world with the deaths of these oldtimers (as the books were written in the 70's primarily).
The Foxfire books were one of the sources that I turned to in an effort to learn about the process.

I thought the Foxfire books were trying to preserve the crafts.
Instead, this book concentrates more on the personalities; how they felt about the craft, what their work was like, what they did day by day, places and people they worked for, how much money they made, the people they ran into along the way.
If you've never read these books, it may be difficult, since the text is written in the vernacular of the mountain folk, but this adds to the charm and "character" of the books.

Owning the FOXFIRE series of books this is one that I probably use the most, since I am an organic gardener who found value in the information on planting according by the moons phase as well as how to weave baskets as well as the quilting section.
These are not fancy dancy books, but basic down to earth helpful information that the modern homesteaders we know still use.
