From then until 1508 he developed parallel with Raphael - though Raphael's was the more imaginative genius - each contributing something to the new High Renaissance type of Madonna with Saints, in which the figure of the Madonna acts not merely as a centre but as a pivot about which the whole composition turns.
Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo had all left Florence by 1509 and in the second decade of the century Fra Bartolommeo was rivalled only by Andrea del Sarto as the leading painter in the city, which he left only briefly for visits to Venice in 1508 and Rome in 1514.
Fra Bartolommeo was a brilliant draughtsman and the mystical element in his nature is expressed in his drawings, which escape the tendency to empty rhetoric occasionally shown in his later paintings.

Near the completion of the painting's yearlong restoration, "a kind of yellowish halo could be seen in the sky in the upper left," the chief restorer, Elisabetta Zatti, said Tuesday, describing the fingerprint she found.

Five hundred years of accumulated varnish, grime and dust have dimmed the brilliance of this Renaissance masterpiece.

A staircase leads to the next floor with Fra' Angelico's famous Annunciation at the top; off the corridor is the splendid Library by Michelozzo and at the end of the corridor, the Cell used by Cosimo de' Medici.
At the end of the corridor is Savonarola's cell where there is a portrait of the martyr painted by Fra' Bartolomeo.

Baccio della Porta, known as Fra Bartolomeo (1472-1517), was a refined Tuscan painter and collaborator of Mariotto Albertinelli, with whom he set up a workshop.
In the small panel at the Uffizi with the monochrome "Annunciation" on one side and the "Circumcision and Nativity" on the other,the mystical aura is clearly visible in the concentration on the faces of the people waiting for the important future events.

Bartolommeo di Paolo del Fattorino, known as Baccio (a version of Bartolommeo) della Porta, ?1472-1517, Florentine painter, became a Dominican when his close friend Savonarola was executed in 1498.
He preferred a quiet life and avoided vicious pleasures, was very fond of sermons, and always sought the society of learned and staid people.
Vasari claims that when Raphael came to Florence he taught the principles of perspective to Fra Bartolommeo, and sought to learn from Fra Bartolommeo his skill in the use of colour.

Dopo la grande mostra antologica che Firenze ha dedicato nel 1996 al pittore fiorentino, ripercorrendone in toto l'attività, le indagini diagnostiche e il restauro scientifico dell'Adorazione Borghese che presentiamo ora, vengono a chiarire ulteriormente la tecnica di esecuzione di Fra' Bartolomeo, con un contributo molto importante per la conoscenza dei disegni preparatori e dei pigmenti.
Ed è da lì che si deve partire per indagare e svelare il “misterioso” intreccio esistente fra la particolare iconografia di una Sacra Famiglia (che è contemporaneamente una Madonna che adora il Bambino Gesù e un'Adorazione dei pastori), il paesaggio e i diversi, criptici e cristologici, simboli sparsi dappertutto.
La prima giornata ad ingresso gratuito alla Galleria Borghese, messa a disposizione dalla Federazione Italiana Tabaccai sponsor del restauro del tondo l'Adorazione del Bambino di Fra' Bartolomeo come omaggio natalizio agli italiani e alla loro arte, ha registrato lunedì 20 dicembre un clamoroso successo di visitatori con ben 964 presenze.
