 FRACTINT Formula Tutorial
By default, Fractint chooses a color based on the number of iterations required to make Z exit the bailout circle, but this can be changed by various options on the Fractint menus.
If Fractint detects that Z has fallen into a periodic loop, repeating the same values over and over without leaving the bailout circle, it reasonably assumes that Z will *never* exit the circle and stops iterating even though the maximum number of iterations may not have been performed yet.
Fractint does it automatically when the parser is used.) Then for each pixel, the initialization section is performed just once; remember that this section extends from the opening brace down to the colon.

 FRACTINT PHC tutorial
As we've seen earlier, the PHC or PTC dithering is based on the value of a variable initialized by Fractint (whitesq) or in the formula (r).
For this reason, the Fractint developers decided to force the floating point mode when the formula parser detects the use of one of the predefined variables "scrnpix", "scrnmax" and "maxit".
With the new variables introduced in Fractint 19.5, PHC and PTC formulas are now resolution independent and the image can be interrupted, saved and restored.

Subject: (fractint) question for developers I understand that there has been a lot of pressure on the Fractint developers to add true-colour support, and I understand that there is also an effort being made to make fractint a 32 bit program, to use a flat memory model and to make the code more portable.
With fractint's current zoom capacity of 10^1600, it is already beyond the capacity of computers to produce the entire standard mandelbrot image at 10^1600, in 1024x768 chunks.
For fractint to be a #2 flavor, this means that: a) "truecolor" renderings would have to be dithered to the current color palette on a screen that isn't in truecolor mode.

 Fractal Art FAQ: Programs
Its name originated from the fact that it emulated floating point math, which was slow at that time (many computers did not have coprocessors) by a fast-integer emulation, together with a floating-point algorithm to support coprocessors (but for a long time the default mode was the integer one).
But this mode is very slow because it does not use the coprocessor and it is not compatible with all types of fractals.
