Fragonset Railways, a spot-hire company with a stock of Class 08 shunting locomotives, and Class 31, Class 33, Class 45, Class 47, Class 56, Class 73 and Class 86 main line locomotives.
UK railways are run at arm's length from the government, through two government organisations, both of which have statutory powers under various Acts of Parliament (such as the Railways Act 1993, the Competition Act 1998 and the Transport Act 2000), and both of which receive Directions and Guidance from the Secretaries of State for Transport.
Most UK railway stations date from the Victorian era and are located on the edge of town centres.

FM Rail (previously Fragonset Railways) bought several redundant locomotives from EWS.

For quite a number of years, I've thought that the Fylde was in danger of becoming a railway backwater.
Fragonset have six Class 31's suitable for the trains - the locomotives are fitted with a control to allow the driver to activate the fire extinguishers in the rear engine from the front one, in case of an emergency.

Fragonset has launched a service called 'Partsales' which is aimed at supplying locomotive owners with spare parts for their vehicles.
West Somerset Railway based 25173 is receiving a new coat of two tone green prior to the installation of its overhauled turbo.
The Nene Valley Railway is holding a three day diesel gala on October 8-10 which is hoped to feature the debut of 56057 along with the resident locos and DMU in action.

In 1931 the London Midland and Scottish Railway Royal Scot 4-6-0 express locomotive No.6159 became the first locomotive to carry a name associated with military aeronautics; it was named 'The Royal Air Force' and ran until November 1962.
British Railways withdrew them by September 1964 and sole survivor 5080 Defiant is owned by the Birmingham Railway Museum, Tyseley and currently on loan to the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre at Quainton Road, pending an overhaul.
Private locomotive hire company Fragonset Railways operate another Class 33 named 'Swordfish', complete with plaque bearing the silhouette of the torpedo bomber of that name; this engine returned to its former stamping-ground on the old Southern Region in 2003.

On the 25th September 2004 NENTA railtours ran the first through train from the mainline for over 10 years.

Fragonset locomotive 47 712 spent some time in the centre sidings at Stockport station this week, presumably having become a failure at some stage.
Fragonset Railways turned out 47 488, in sparkling condition, for train 1H28, 15.16 Birmingham International to Manchester, seen in these two views standing at Stafford and, below, pulling smokily away.
Still at Stafford, here is train 1O14, 15.10 Liverpool to Poole, in charge of another Fragonset locomotive, 47 703, painted in the company's standard livery based on the post-war LMS railway livery and carrying another version of the Fragonset crest.

This means that, in addition to considering existing safety risks and requirements, HSE can also take into account, for instance, practicalities, costs, possible disruption to services, severe overcrowding, the transfer of risk to other modes of transport and the possible introduction of new risks.
After a separate application and consultation, HSE has also granted short-term exemptions, subject to conditions, to Dartmoor Railway Ltd until 12 August 2005 in respect of their Mark I rolling stock operations on their own infrastructure.
HSE is in discussion with Dartmoor Railway concerning longer-term exemption on a basis commensurate with the exemptions granted to the other heritage/charter train companies.

With the withdrawal of steam by 1965, Barnstaple Junction received a Class 08 diesel shunter and this loco was often used to shunt Torrington yard.
The class 08 shunter is the largest class of diesel locomotive on British Railways.
These locomotives spent virtually their entire careers based on the Southern Region, although from 1972 to 1977 they worked from Exeter to Barnstaple and during the 1980's could be seen as far and wide as Plymouth, Cardiff and Manchester.

In April 2000, it was announced that D9000 had joined the Fragonset Railways operational fleet, although remaining in the ownership of DNLL.
The loco made her passenger debut under the Fragonset banner on September 9th 2000, with a successful outing from Carnforth to Scarborough and return, and operated a number of charters whilst operating under Fragonset.
The completed loco was unveiled to the railway press at a launch on September 7th 1999, and carried a modified version of Porterbrook colours.

This locomotive is operated by Fragonset Rail for Class 33/1 Preservation Company Ltd and is currently on lease to South West Trains.
33108 was built by Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company in September 1960 and started its working life numbered as D6521 in BR green with light grey roof and off white window surrounds with a 3 inch wide off white stripe along the middle of the body sides which extended round the cab fronts.
Both locomotives now carry Fragonset allover fl livery with red stripe and full width yellow warning panel from below the cab windows.

The Health and Safety Executive has granted exemptions to enable twelve heritage/charter train companies, and other operators of their Mark 1 rolling stock to continue to run stock without central door locking.
HSE's decision to grant the exemptions from Railway Safety Regulations 1999 followed six weeks of open public consultation on the applications.
The HSE looks after health and safety in nuclear installations and mines, factories, farms, hospitals and schools, offshore gas and oil installations, the safety of the gas grid and the movement of dangerous goods and substances, railway safety, and many other aspects of the protection both of workers and the public.

The locomotive is named after a Bristol-based solicitor who died in 2003 leaving a wide and seven children.
EWS offered a prize of "Name a loco for a year" at the Railway Children dinner and Burges Salmon won the prize.
The loco will be named until July 2005, after which one plate will be presented to Mr Harrington's wife and and the other will be presented to the law company.

The top picture shows 31452 at Brighton on 5th March 2004 in the livery of owners Fragonset Railways.
Seen stabled at Bristol Temple Meads on 22nd August, together with three of her sister ships, is 31128 of Fragonset Railways.
These units are on loan from the Derby-based company to Wessex Trains, mostly for use on the Heart of Wessex Line to Weymouth.

In 1998 Fox Transfers were commissioned to design and produce a crest for the newly formed Fragonset Railways Limited.
The splendid beasty which you see here was the result and the transfers which we produced now adorn most of this company's ex-BR engines.
A second design was also produced, based on the British Railways steam era second locomotive devise: this shows the Fragonset dragon in the centre portion and the title replacing the British Railways wording on the side bars.
