Clawhammer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On the banjo, the most common definitions are that frailing means always picking the drone string, and clawhammer allows you to pick other strings with the thumb, which is also called "double-thumbing" or "drop-thumb".
In guitar, Steve Baughman, a skilled player and prominent proponent, defines "frailing" as using the index finger for picking melody (which is done by up-picking) and the middle finger for strumming, and "clawhammer" as using only downstrokes with one finger as is the usual technique on the banjo.
One usage of "clawhammer" in guitar circles refers to a style in which the pinky finger or the pinky and ring fingers are used to brace the hand and the index finger, middle finger, and thumb are used to pluck the strings.

Frailing is simply another word for clawhammer style, which is exclusively a DOWNWARD picking technique.

The five-string open-backed banjo is played in a style called "frailing." I have lost many games of Scrabble by using the word frailing.
Frailing is a combination of strumming and picking, sometimes called "drop-thumbing." The thumb drops from the fifth string to whatever string it chooses, while the forefinger plucks upward and the rest of the fingers strum across the strings.

You play three finger (or frailing) because of the nature of the banjo -- it's a very sharp, pure tone, but sustain is bascially nothing compared to a guitar.
Frailing makes it easy to strum all the strings, leading to the "note, thumb, strum, thum" pattern of frailing.
A variation of frailing is "drop thumb" -- which is really frailing with a clawhammer thumb, so you get a sharper drone or bass string effect.

The same with "frail", although I did learn that one of its meanings is a quantified unit of raisins.
Using the ring finger for the third beat of a 4/4 measure seems to lend more flexibility to what is happening on the melody during the second beat, because one doesn't need to depend on hammer-ons or the same finger (index) striking two strings back to back.
One of the really cool things about "delayed thumb" guitar frailing is that it gives you an subtle BASS pick-up note before the melody is plucked with your index finger.

Which finger is used on the downbeat is not important, except that you should pick one and stick with it.
What NOT To Do It is important in frailing that you not pluck the string with a motion of your finger, but rather with the motion of your whole hand.
Similarly, you should not really pluck the fifth string with your thumb as much as sound it on releasing your hand from the strings between beats.

 Frailing vs Clawhammer
One frequently asked question about the 5-string banjo concerns the differences between "frailing" and "clawhammer." This is not easily resolved, simply because it would appear to be largely a matter of opinion.
In its basic form, then, frailing consists of striking downward on a string (or several strings) with a nail (the player's choice, although the index and middle fingers are the most commonly used), then--on the next beat--repeating the motion, and finally --on the off beat--plucking the fifth, or drone, string.
So what is the difference between "frailing" and "clawhammer?" Depending on your point of view, there either is none, or "clawhammer" describes a "double-thumb" technique while "frailing" precludes it unless otherwise noted.

Slow Jam: What Is Clawhammer Banjo?
You'll sometimes hear mountain folk refer to Old Time as "old-timey" music, often to distinguish it from more modern forms of music popular in rural America such as pop country and bluegrass.
Clawhammer banjo is distinguished by a "frailing" pattern in the right hand.
In this pattern, the back of the index or middle fingernail plucks a melody note or strums on each beat, while the thumb plays between beats by plucking the fifth string (and occasionally other strings).
