Scatha - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A mighty Long-worm of the Grey Mountains and one of the greatest dragons to infest the Grey Mountains of the north, little is known of Scatha's life, except that he was slain by Fram son of Frumgar (an ancestor of Eorl the Young) in the early days of the Éothéod.
Fram rebuked their claim, and sent them the teeth of the dragon, with the words, 'Jewels such as these you will not match in your treasuries, for they are hard to come by'.
However this dispute was resolved (we are not told), it seems that Fram's people retained at least some of the hoard, and brought it south with them when they settled in Rohan.

Scatha is the core of a story told only as an anecdote about the Northman hero Fram, who slays the dragon and recovers a hoard taken from the Dwarves.
Scatha's death does not end Fram's tale, however, for the Dwarves demand that he return their hoard and he refuses, so they kill him (or arrange for his death).

Up until now earth had been flat, but it was now reshaped and made into a globe.
What it was could not be seen: it was like a great shadow, in the middle of which was a dark form, of man-shape maybe yet greater; and a power and terror seemed to be in it and to go before it.

It is interesting to note, therefore, that Tolkien gives to the Istar most closely associated with Eriador a name in Old Norse (the language he used to represent the language of Dale and Laketown) and to Bombadil a name in Anglo-Saxon (the language he used to represent the language of the Rohirrim).
We may infer that perhaps either the Westron of Eriador in the middle of the Third Age was mingled with more northman words than the Westron of Gondor or else Gandalf and Bombadil spent a fair amount of time in Wilderland.
It's difficult to imagine Gandalf letting even a proud and valiant warrior like Fram send an insulting message to the Dwarves as Fram did, unless the exchange of discourtesies occurred after Gandalf moved on.

Thus Fram won great wealth, but was at feud with the Dwarves, who claimed the hoard of Scatha.
Fram would not yield them a penny, and sent to them instead the teeth of Scatha made into a necklace, saying: "Jewels such as these you will not match in your treasuries, for they are hard to come by." Some say that the Dwarves slew Fram for this insult.
Fram rebuked their claim, and sent them the teeth of the dragon, with the words, "Jewels such as these you will not match in your treasuries, for they are hard to come by." Thereafter there was war between the Éothéod and the Dwarves, a war in which Fram met his end.

Worse yet, if you set a critic down amongst a group of die-hard readers, the critic might roll his eyes and scratch his head or try to change the subject as the readers go on about how Maglor is probably living on the shores of the Sea of Rhun.
If a reader asks why Fram slew Scatha the Worm, the critic is likely to bring up Beowulf (who has absolutely nothing to do with Fram and Scatha, but "Beowulf" and Beowulf are the universal keys to Tolkien in some people's eyes).

However, with Morgoth gone, they were no longer under anyone's control, as Sauron never mustered the strength to command those mightiest of Morgoth's creations.
Therefore, the dragons used to take abodes of their own, devastating dwellings of the free peoples, and gathering about them great hoards of riches; Scatha, who was slain by Fram, a Northman, and Smaug, the dragon in The Hobbit, both possessed great treasures robbed from the dwarves.
Most we know about dragons is handed down in the stories of a few individual specimen and their slayers.
